My buddy bought a really nice (at the time) 1989 Blazer a few years ago. He then proceeded to beat on it and break things. First was the 10 bolt rear axle. I replaced it with a 12 bolt. I charged him for the axle and the parts, but no labor. That lasted about a year, and blew up. So he sourced a set of 3/4 tons axles (external hub Dana 44 and 14bff). Together we swapped those. His rear brakes were ****, so I put rear discs on it. Used all of my parts, and he was broke at the time, so I bought the new parts as well (seal,s etc). Next up was the engine that he popped. It sat for quite awhile, until I bought a used 350 TBI for him. Then I swung the engine at another buddy's shop. He never came and paid the bill on the engine swing, so I did.

Then he sold it. To his brother. I never even got an opportunity to buy it.

Now I am fixing it again........

When I did the engine swing, I found a hole in the Dana 44 diff cover. Pulled the cover, and found the spider gears fragged. I told the kid to just buy a Lock Right, and I would install it.

Silly Dana axles. Why put the cross shaft where it interferes with the ring gear?

Cleaned out the housing. The pinion is not too pretty, but we'll see how long it lasts.

44-6 cast inside the housing.

....but 44-8 cast into the outside of the housing???

Lockright installed.

Carrier back in the axle.

Fresh paint, just to make Dueling happy.

Had to weld up the hole in the stock cover.

Damn parts store sent me the wrong paper gasket, so I had to use silicone instead.

You better appreciate this Deuling!

So of course, I had to check the locker operation.

Walked right up there. I thought that was pretty good flex for stock suspension (it has a set of three pack springs, and a zero rate in the front).

Isn't the Dana 44 and a 10 bolt similar? I was under the impression lockers were bad up front 'cause they break axles.

Or just be ready to replace stuff?

Depends on how you wheel it and how much skinny pedal you like. I had a front locker in my dana 44 on 36 TSLs for a long time.

Martin you need new friends lol. Ive never had a problem helping a true friend labor wise with doing stuff but I draw the line at putting my own money into their **** for no return.

So you buy the parts AND do the labor for free?????

Head this way. I have 2 combines, 14 tractors, 34 trailers, 2 powerstrokes, couple dodges....that all need work. wanna be friends???

I really didn't think he would ever sell it. I am also not too mad that he didn't offer it to me, seeing as he sold it to his brother. If he would have sold it to a non family member, that would be a whole different story. He also never asked for any of the stuff I gave him. I offered. Hell, I bought the engine on a whim. I didn't even tell him till after I had already loaded it up and hauled it home.

You're still a saint. Is there a Saint Martin? Should be.

Man do I know how ya feel. 4 specific rigs come to mind. With all of them they started stock. Ended up lifted and geared usually. Did tons of work for free. Gear installs bumpers, sliders, cages. In all 4 of these cases guys sold them for a serious profit. They simply would not have been able to do all the work cause they lacked the specialty tools to do so.

Oh well it is what it is I could have said no. I really like helping out but it irks me when the truck goes up for sale literally before the paint is dry.

Sounds like he beats on his truck and doesn't value it because he has you to buy parts and fix it for him every time. Seriously, it's nice of you to use your talents to help someone out. I've done the same and sometimes found myself getting upset because I'll fix things for people and they don't take care of them.

Meh, I egged him on to use it. I am not too worried about it. I was more making fun of myself, and just showing off some work I did.

This would have actually made me mad if that was the case. In this situation he damn near gave it away, to his own brother. His brother is young, has a family, and is not rolling in money. That is why I continued working on it.

They simply would not have been able to do all the work cause they lacked the specialty tools to do so.

That however exactly applies to this situation. Other than the first axle swap, he helped with most of the work anyway.

Could be. It is only on 35" tires though, and there are no rocks here. It will mostly be a river toy.

Oh, that and I draw the nice guy line at giving away Dana 60's.........

Have you ever installed a spartan locker? They are basically the same as the lockright, but they have these little pins that hold the springs together for installing. I find it a lot easier than the lockright.

Good to know, I'm planning on picking one up soon.
