Im planning on changin the motor oil in my jimmy within the next couple days. I was wondering what oil you guys are running/recommend. the motor has less then 13k on it and I wanna keep it goin for a good long time. I used durablend valvoline in my L03 camaro and drove the livin piss outta it. I have been wanting to try amsoil or royal purple though. any suggestions?

Contact 4by4bygod (vendor) and get his opinion. He will give you honest opinions that you can take to the bank. I haven't ordered the oil from him yet, but I plan to, just gotta work out the finances a bit. Well worth at least pm'ing him to get his opinion. He can also set you up with a test kit to see what is really happening.

If this is your daily driver use any conventional 10w30 in summer and 5w30 in winter. The brand is not as important as changing the oil at 3000 miles (religiously). Follow that advice and you will get 200K - 300K miles on that engine.

i've heard good things about both ... never used them though ... i've always run a castrol oil with a lucas oil stabilizer and never had any complaints ... i'm looking at about 180k on my '85 k20 suburban, with a lot of it towing through mountainous montana, just rolled over 200k in my toyota 4runner and it hasn't had an easy life either ... really, oil is to each their own ...

I use Valvoline oil and a Wix filter and religiously change it every 3000 miles.

cool deal, Ive been wanting to try lucas, but a buddy of mine who maintains a fleet of truck used it one time. Next oil change the pan looked like a bubble bath! He about ****. I guess the stuff is known to foam up?

yeah, the lucas is known to get foamy. the other thing it'll do is fall out of suspension and stay in the pan once it's exposed to combustion temps for a few miles..

additive drop out is already an issue with synthetic and conventional oils alike, ( due to conventional oil's inability to absorb heat, and the PAO / ester synthetic oil inability to keep additives in suspension ), so using a heavy oil as an additive is kind of going backwards.

what you want is something that promotes film strength without increasing drag and friction, or changing the viscosityof the host oil.

that's the thing about oil additives - they're a combination of petroleum, metallics, polymers, chlorine and wax. they do nasty things under combustion.. like leave deposits, and change the viscosity of the lube.

anyway, as for a recommendation - if you want to go the inexpensive route, just buy valvoline or something like that, and dump it and the filter at 3K..If you had no interest in my stuff, I'd rather see you do that then spend good money on a synthetic, and not be better off.

Synthetic isn't what it used to be, and although there are some upsides, it always did have some performance drawbacks..rather than piss everyone off with a rehash, you can search "synthetic oil" here, and dig for my posts - the info is still valid.

If you are really committed to using amsoil or something like that, be aware that the drain intervals have shortened up to compensate for the reduced anti wear additives ( unless you are buying what's known as a "full zinc" racing oil) ..as always, if you are gonna do the extended drain thing, get the oil analyzed so you know what your engine is up to.

I use Valvoline 10W40 with a Wix filter. I've used Valvoline in every vehicle I've owned and I've never had a problem with it.

I did use Royal Purple in my 72 Pontiac Ventura II once, and in my opinion, it's totally overrated. It only has 68,000+ original miles on it, and that oil leaked out of every possible gasket.........................and if it could've found a way to leak out of the tires it would have!

I run Valvoline 20w-50 in my 99 Yukon, it still looks really clean after 2500 miles, and I get 50-60 lbs of pressure at normal operating temp. I also have a Purolator filter. In the heat of summer, I like thick oil to keep pressure up and wear to a min (by what my mechanic friend told me when I was young) and use thin oil in the winter (5w-30) But the winters here reach to -30 at times, and I used that 0w-30 that Valvoline (I believe) had for a while, hated it. Oh, and the thick 20w-50 seems to take a lot of heat out of the engine, as my temp gauge drops more then usual going down hills with it.

I have used several oils in my truck with good success. My current setup is Amsoil 15w-40 diesel oil (gas motor) with an Amsoil absolute efficiency filter. I use the same combo on my towrig which is a diesel. I used to run Valvoline Premium Blue (dyno) 15w-40 diesel oil. Diesel oil is fine in gas motors, it just has a more beefed up additive package in the oil to help deal with the soot and other things diesels produce.

If you want synthetic I would run Mobil 1, Amsoil, Rotella, Valvoline Prem Blue Extreme. No specific order.

If you want a good dyno oil Rotella T 15w-40, Valvoline Prem Blue, Valvoline, ...

The key is to run a good oil with the best filter you can find. Filters are just as important as oil. Get a good filter. Wix, Napa Gold, Amsoil, Donaldson, .... etc. Those are the only filters I will run in my trucks, again in no specific order. There are others that are good too but those are the ones that are easiest for me to get and they are good.

Used to be castrol and fram filter. Now that im working at a dealership and noticed the differences it's valvoline and ac delco filter.

question regarding thick oil. it gets hot as a sum bitch here in teh summer 110+ so I tried 20-50 in my camaro which was a 305 L03 and noticed a slight power decrease. It just seemed sluggish as hell. Also I hear with a thick oil like that its not good for a low mileage motor? Im pretty much just lookin for a good combo for my DD 350 jimmy. This is the second place ive heard of people having good results with rotella motor oil. 15-40 should be fine for my application?

I used 10w30 Mobil 1 Synthetic, half a bottle of lucas stabilizer, with a Mobile 1 filter. I havent changed it yet to see how it will wear but from what I hear the stuff goes for 15,000 miles ?! I'm not about to believe that so its definatly coming out at 3000 but apparently if it wasnt for the fact that this is the first change from conventional to synthetic I could leave it for a long time.

I've heard alot of good things about royal purple. A buddy of mine whos a mechanic says his car usually chews oil up at about 2000-2500 miles but royal purple still looks good after 3000. I was thinking about trying it but I dont really see any reason to. My motor has 35,000 miles on it and I'm kinda curious if I should run anything thicker than the 5/10w30.

thicker oil usually means less fuel economy. Our old motors dont seem to mind the 40 wt in the summer.

I've switched to my old stock zinc rich 15w40 diesel motor oil. might switch to maxlife semi synth later.. who knows, I havent driven the truck in 4 years, I just start er up once in a while, and change the oil every year.

With 20w-50 I still get 21 mpg's out of Yukon, now I'm wondering what I'd get with 10w-40?

When I worked for Loctite back in Ohio, we had a lubrication engineer from Mobil at our plant to help us with some lubrication problems. I asked him about Mobil 1 in autos and he said it could be run for 10K miles, but change the filter every 5K. I run it for 5K in the burb with an 8 quart pan, and for only 3K in the GN because of the turbo. I pulled the pan off the burb a couple months ago with 70K miles and it still looks new in there. You could still see the cross hatch in the cylinder walls. I know they say Mobil 1 is missing certain additives so the next time I change it, I will just add GM EOS.
