Buying a complete 1987 K5 from buddy for $1300 . It was full rebuild 1000 miles ago , but then he parked it for 8 years !!! YES 8 years . I know the builder , it was done right , 60 over , 10 1/2 compression , cam , headers . Nice motor !! 400 plus hp The K 5 looks good , straight body , every thing is there . Baby bald tires on nice rims , K5 has 6 in lift with 3 in body . ITS BIG !! I just want tailgate and motor . Should I be afraid of engine sitting for 8 yrs ? He did drain the gas out of tank , then parked it . I am thinking pouring tranny fluid down plug holes , and mix some in gas . What do ya think ? I am going to put my 305 engine and my tailgate on it then sell it !!!! I hope after I clean it up , I can break even or even make some cash , by flipping it . I get a nice 350 and a tailgate out of the deal .

squirt a little marvel mystery oil at the top of each piston (like at the highest point in the cylinder taking into account the angle of the piston dome) let the oil run down around the rings for a day or two then try to turn the engine over (with plugs out) by turning the flywheel with a flywheel tool...if it turns over, change the oil and filter then prime the oil system with a drill powered primer tool, install plugs, freshen up ignition components, fuel and filters, and let it run!

For the price, it might be worth the gamble. You failed to mention WHY it has sat for 8 yrs.

Let's say it's not engine-related. I would try to turn the crank to see how frozen it is. Pour tranny fluid or marvel mystery oil down the cylinders, flush the fuel out of everything, and if it all passes the once-over, try to start it. However, I would be prepared to have to change all the gaskets and seals and possible fuel related components that may have deteriorated - especially if it had ethanol in it. Speaking of which, is this a carb or aftermarket efi motor? 87 is a TBI year. If it still has TBI on it, it's definitely not making 400hp. Doesn't mean the motor is junk, just adds to the mystery.

Overall, you've got to ask yourself if the price is worth it assuming the motor is totally useless.

He got married , 2 kids , it just sat there . I think its a 600 carb ? I know its a carb engine now . The guy who built it , is a buddy of mine , and he builds some HOT engines !
Not sure , I guess I will roll the dice !! Gamble some !! :eek1:

ask the engine builder his opinion as well!

:waytogo: That's a good ideal , I will call him !

Got it RUNNING !!!!! Not getting fuel , so only runs off pouring gas down carb . Thumps HARD !! Sweet motor if I can get it ironed out !

but its dumping tranny fluid out the dip stick ????????????

bad fuel pump?
plugged vent on the trans?

That's what I am hoping for . It will be 2 weeks or so before I can mess with it again ! But HAPPY it runs . :waytogo:

Can't see how you can go wrong with a clean straight K5 for $1300, even if it has no motor.

Going to run it some more , then pull motor and tranny , clean her up then SELL IT !!!!

ppfffftttt!

I have factory "fresh" crate motor I bought in '05....still sitting :doah:

congrats on your score....:thumb:

Is a 305s comp cam to much for a weekend toy , daily driver , tow rig ? One guy is saying sell ME the truck and engine , the 350 with that much cam is NOT for you , and my buddy is saying , KEEP it , buy a stall converter and have a great thumping engine !!
Should I just sell and buy different engine ?
Keep it and buy a stall ?
or change the cam to small cam ? and keep it
New to engine stuff , so not sure who to trust
thanks for any info !!!

My buddy is going to sell my tear down outer covers , check everything out , then put it in my 74 K5 !!! :waytogo:

That's the one with 305 duration and .541" of lift right? I wouldn't put a 305 in a truck or even a car that I drove regularly. That's not a cam designed for being streetable, but the definition of streetable varies from person to person. And a cam with that kind of lift really needs to be in a larger displacement motor, maybe a stroker. When it comes to a truck, low end is best. Unless you're building a mud bogger, most of that cam's power range is beyond what you'd be using in a 4x4. It's a 3000-7000 powerband, probably a lot more suited to a lightweight car. You'd definitely need a more radical convertor to run it. High stall converters are generally not suited towards towing or off-roading, plus they build a lot of heat.

If you want to keep it, by all means, but IMO it's just not a cam that's suitable for a daily driver or a heavy truck. After the novelty wears off you might not be too happy. You see this a lot, people throw extreme parts at an engine for dyno bragging rights, but don't give a lot of thought to how the engine is going to be used. If it were me I'd get a cam that's more biased toward the low end. You'll lose some power that you probably wouldn't be accessing anyway, but gain a lot of torque and driveability. If you like that aggressive idle, you can find cams that have some chop but still are good to drive. Or you can sell it and put the money towards a more suitable motor.

Just my 2 cents...

Wow ! Thanks !!!
Not sure what cam is in it? Going to check , but I plan on going to a small cam and keep engine . After I sell rolling chassis , I hope to have zero dollars in engine .
