Motor thoughts for s10 project

Having a modded 6.5td in my truck I can say that i wanted hesitate to run one in an expo style rig. I'm considering building a full tube buggy oneday and I'm most likely going to run a 6.5 in it. They're simple, cheap, and reliable when taken cared of. When used in the manner for which they were designed for, it's had to beat the value they give.

Best part is, if a 350 can be swapped in an NA 6.2/6.5 will bolt right up. they weight about the same as a bbc. In the range of 850 lbs fully dressed with turbo.

You're more then welcome to check out my truck. I'm fixing a leaky valve cover right now, but will be up and running this weekend. I know its different being a fullsize, but can give you an idea of how the motors act and stuff.

i've been researching them alot lately because i wanna swap one into my 76 and besides the headgasket issue which is somewhat rare they look ****in bulletproof.

Well I'm considering this now. The 4bts are just too much money and too much of a hassle IMO. I dont have an unlimited money for this project. a 6.2L take out may be my answer to my diesel wants :) And definitely no problem with having a detroit under the hood :)

4.56s look like they would be perfect cruising around with the .73 OD of the n3500 and 35in high tires. 2300 rpms about.

My burb has over 200,000 on it still runs like a sewing machine

That's what I have in mine, 4:56s and 35s and I have a 700r4. I sit at 2000 rpms at 65.

Whats mileage like? I could only imagine an s10 would pull quite a few mpgs out since its only about 2000lbs lighter depending on if we're talking about a longbed or a burb.

From what i've heard diesel's mileage doesnt change too much according to weight unless its a huge difference. Im guessing because they usually have more than double the compression of gas engines. Again due to my reserach because of the 6.2l swap i wanna do everyone says they get anywhere from 15-25 mpg. 18-20 Appears most common

Well I'd definitively be satisfied with 20-22mpg. I'd imagine that the 4.3 is gonna only get me around 15-17mpg...

The question now is whats gonna fit in that s10 engine bay. I'm not concerned with weight, its gonna be leafsprings up front...

Btw all 6.2s are fully mechanical right?

according to Trusty k5 it is full mechanical injection. Although im not sure if that means NO computers/sensors. I would think so although i havent researched far enough to know yet. As far as fitting it, Good luck .

Well as mentioned theres a guy on pirate that had a 6.5 turbo squeezed into an s10 and I've seen plenty of Small blocks and big blocks in them. The 6.2 is right between the two of them size wise isnt it?

From what I've just read bare bones the 6.2 needs 1 wire to fuel cutoff to shut it off thats it.

Yes, i wire to the fuel pump well and then the glowplug stuff but its pretty basic if you can install a stereo you can wire a 6.2

If thats all it needs then im going to have a very smooth and easy first diesel motor swap. I dont doubt you can fit that motor im just saying it seems like quite a job which will take alot of :hack: a little  followed by some :doah:

if that guy on pirate can stuff a durmax with turbo and all into a s10 i dont think you will have any problems putting a 6.2 or even the 6.5

I really think I may go for it...

Plus going with 4.56 gears to turn the rpms down will allow me to scavenge the bone yard for stock 4.56 toyota third members and save me somewhere around $1000 on diff stuff.

So what do I want to be turning RPM wise on the highway. I'm shooting for a 65-70mph cruising RPM.

4.56s and a TRUE 35in tire @ 70mph yields 2237RPMs with the .73 OD of a nv3500.

4.88s and a TRUE 35in tire @ 70mph yields2394RPMs with the .73 OD of a nv3500

I would think 4.56s would be better considering the fact that on flat land I'll probably wind up cruising at 75 but is 2237 @70 and 2070 @ 65 gonna feel like a dog in OD?

With all my experience in HMMWV's in the Army and them not having a tach, you'll be fine without one. You'll be able to hear if the motor is in the sweet spot, and you can feel the power band die off before you get there.

Yeah I dont doubt that but I like to observe whats going on. I know alot of tach kits run off the alternator.... did our trucks come with the 6.2 and a tach?
