Well originally I was gonna go with a stock rebuilt 4.3 with some 1.6 rockers to bump the cam up a little and that was it.

The gears in my head are turning and I'm thinking that a diesel swap would be badass. My initial thought was 4bt... What say you all?

I think a 4bt/nv3500/241/toy axles would be a stellar combo if the 4bt was tamed to the right torque.

Screw that. 572 big block with a TH400 behind it and an Atlas behind that. Nothing would stop you.

I think a super reliable, super usable s-10 would be sweet. Something that you can drive everyday, have enough power on the weekends, but is awesome on fuel.

Stick a cummins 12v in it. Cut a hole in the firewall with no tunnel with the nv4500. Reminds me of a beretta I saw that a guy stuck a 454 in and he had to sit in the back seat to drive it.

i'd consider the isuzu 4 cylinder a little lighter, and closer to your torque range.

or a mercedes 5 cylinder, out of a 240 or 300. and these are cheap. there is a guy on the interweb with one in a late model blazer 4door. i'll see if i can find it.

I always wanted to do a Buick turbo 3.8 in a 4x4 S-10 I've seen them in 2-wheel S-10s and they were wicked and got really good economy.

that being said a little diesel would be cool

I'm looking into Isuzu diesels. The 4bts are just to expensive. 3 grand for a used no guarantee motor is ridiculous.

I know the Chevy Luvs and Izuzu pups used a little Izuzu diesel no turbo and they were kinda doggy, but with a turbo and a little tweaking they could be neat.

What about a jetta TDI ?
they seem to be popular in Samurai's and I've heard off over 300hp being possible.

before you give up on the 4bt you should try to find a old Frito Lay truck they came with 4bt's mated to GM autos . I helped swapped a 4BT into my buddies jeepster commando and we used a 700R4/Dana300. he gets 25-30 MPG and as good power

As for the 3000 for used un tested motor ,that does seem high, but there very very reliable and easy to get lots of power from and cheap to rebuild IF they need it

I think this route would add too much cost to my project. I would have to run 4.10s vs 4.88s with the gasser which just means even more changes should I not do everything up front. Not to mention the nv3500 isnt gonna hold up to a 3.9L diesel isuzu or cummins.

Perhaps I'll stick with 4.3 for now just because theres too many variables to go from one to another...

Thoughts on the 6.2/6.5? I know they have some inherit problems as far as headgasket. How are they budget wise? Nv3500 behind this motor?

6.2/6.5 would be cool!! I really like the ones I have and its hard to argue with 20+ mpg and good low end tourqe

Hmmm 150hp and 260ft/lbs of torque seem like it could be a nice motor...

6.2 NA looks like it would be the way to go for my application. Torquey, and good MPG. How are they reliability wise?

6.2 reliability depends on the owner. some last for upwards of 500k. some well don't. very simple motor, can be very reliable if you pay attention to glow plugs, and filter changes. auto tranny's are iffy behind them, specifically a stock 700r4.

i've been researching them alot lately because i wanna swap one into my 76 and besides the headgasket issue which is somewhat rare they look ****in bulletproof.
