well, just to bring ya'll up to date... the motor is out of a 1992 G20 van, i swapped intake manifolds, and rebuilt my HEI dizzy. the carb is a 750 holley, and for some reason i can't get this truck to start.

here is how i have it all hooked up, it also has an electric fuel pump that is grounded to the frame. i should be able to tap the wire to the dizzy(red one in diagram) and the fuel pump wire and it should start right???? the starter is hooked to a switch and i flip that switch, then touch the fuel pump and dizzy wire to the batt, then let flip the starter off. what's holdin me up here???? the truck has backfired out the exhaust a couple times but hasn't started. one time it sounded like it was going too...but no such luck. the battery died after like 10tries with the dizzy in different possitions(timing)

well, anybody have any clue???? thanks alot guys

oh yeah, the firing order i used is this:1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

and as far as the not having the ignition hooked up, it's because the wring is hacked and i wanna get this beast running,

i just wanna hear it run damn it!!!!!!

THE BATTERY IS GROUNDED TO FRAME AND BATTERY BECAUSE IF I TAKE ONE OFF, EITHER THE FUEL PUMP, OR THE STARTER DON'T WORK!!!!

i heard that would make it backfire out the carb though right???? not the headers? i could be wrong though. it flamed out the tailpipes(headers) one time, and a couple more times it just made this weird popping sound.

thanks jason...im gonna try that tonight, and charge my battery a little.....

anybody have any other ideas????

thanks

yup, it's 180 off...

It'll pop out both, depending on where it is...

TDC

lace from where the rotor is pointing.. basically you can just swap the wires around on the cap at this point..

if your fussy, pull it, TDC and redrop it with the rotor pointing at the #1 cylinder, just turn the oil pump rod to get it to drop where you want..

And for the record, you need a motor to frame ground, not sure if you said that...

awesome man...yeah, right now they're both grounded to the batt, but ill just ground one i geuss. thanks again!

The reason one stops working is you need to grd the motor to the frame.. your using them as 2 seperate grounds, the motor and frame.... your motor mounts break up the grd "chain"... This can cause other issues too... usually a vehicle will have a strap from the back of the passenger head down to the frame...

well, got the dizzy right, and after like 15 more tries, nothing, even adjustying the timing. would my ground as stated above by ryoken cause this??? ill ground it correctly tomm after work. thanks guys

NOPE. starting with #1 a little right of center on dizzy, i went clockwise like my manual says.

i went 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 which is what it says for HEI ignition, which is what i have.

and yeah, i have spark b/c it backfired and flames blew out the exhaust. :)

thanks again ya'll

i actually pulled it myself out of a 92 G20 van, and i heard it run the day i pulled it. that was about 8 months ago, and it has just been sitting since. it had 55,xxx miles on it when i pulled it.

it sounds like it's hesitating a bit, but it could be due to a dead battery. im gonna go get a new one tomm prolly. and see what happens. it sounded like it was going to fire once or twice today, but no go.

Somethings screwed up in your firing order...

How did you drop it in? How did you find TDC? You say the dizzy is right now, was it 180 out before?

Screw that left of center bs, I fire every motor I put together right at TDC... line a tower up, lace it and fire it...

it was 180 out before. now it's not backfiring at all...it sounds like it's ready to start right up but im not sure. i ddin't find TDC. i figured i'd drop the dizzy in, and if it was 180 out, swap it and screw with timing till it fired. that's what i did once before.

There's you problem... dizzy are not just a function of 180 or right...

no wonder it wont start... as i said, find tdc... look where rotors pointing, make that tower on the cap #1, lace from there...
