Okay I don't really have much cash at the current time.

So I sit here day dreaming on the computer.

Current stable, Horton ( no changes happening here) The Jimmy 6.2 NA daily driver. The dually, sitting no motor well no drivetrain but I have all but the motor.

Stuff I have, in the garage, a half built 454 ( needs heads and a couple other things) a turbo 6.2.

I was going to put the turbo 6.2 into the Jimmy.

Now I am thinking of putting into the dually. First problem I see with this is gearing, using a sm 465 and the dually has 4.56 gears. Regearing would probably be on the order of 3 or 4 hundred after I get new bearings and used gears and then I could really only go down to 4.10s I would have to look hard ( have been) for some 3.73s for the 60. Buying new gears I could finish the 454 and go with the original plan for a similar cost.

I just think without an overdrive I would be pretty limited as far as speed went with the 6.2.

Who here has towed with a turbo 6.2?

Would I be better off putting the turbo 6.2 in the Jimmy towing with it ( local tows no speeds faster than 55 and probably only twice a month) Which I already do.

Putting the 6.2 turbo in the dually and living with the speed limitations 55 I would be 2700 rpms. 75 I would be 3700:eek1:.

But would I be more happy with the 6.2 turbo in the Jimmy (daily driver status) and just wait a bit more on the dually.

The eventual plan ( just like everyones) is to put a cummins in the dually, so if I put the 454 in there now I would sell it to help when a cummins came along, if I put the 6.2 in there it will get swapped over to the Jimmy.

Good grief sorry about the ramblings guys just kind of bummed I don't have the wherewithall to do this the way I want to do it.

So what would you do? Also I like my current stable probably going to keep them all.

Oh yah and I did have a 6.5 turbo motor lined up but that motor turned out to be well about a millimeter south of blowing up. So it would have needed a full rebuild.

I will tell you towing with my 6.2 N/a in the heat is pretty worthless. When it is cool it does OK. I have 4.11s though. I have had it to 70 plus. I think we found my governs out at 3200 or something when I dynoed it. I am planning on turboing it this winter.

I tow with the Jimmy right now 6.2 NA yah its an exercise in frustration. At least you have time to appreciate the scenery. I have 35s but 4.56s and a 700, I know I know ideal tow rig right? a lifted Jimmy with 10 bolts and a 700:doah::doah::doah:

I towed alot with my K10 (383, 33s, 10 bolts 4.10s and a 700) but the dually handles it so much better. fast? No. But the suspension is SO much better. I think it would be great with a few more ponies for highway speed. I have no interest in OD right now just aftermarket a/c.

The turbo 6.2 turned up all the way will pull similar to a mild 454, but reliability was less with the 6.2 (for me). Never had 4.56 gear with the 6.2 though. Unloaded, the 6.2 will get double the mileage of the 454, but towing only about 2 mpg better.

I have been towing with my tbi454 burb, and getting very close to the same mpg as my last burb that was set up identical other than having a turbo 6.2.

We put a LOT of towing miles on a '81 dually with a 454/465/4.56s and 235 to 255 rubber and it was good. I also had a '82 crewcab with the 6.2, turbo, TH400 and 4.10s for a while. Given your parts, I'd find a way to put the 454 together for the crewcab, put the turbo'd motor in the K5 (which it's ideal for anyway) and keep finding the cummins. As good as the 454 was, the gearing range and splits were kind of crappy and running freeway speeds was pretty loud. And the milage wasn't great. Those problems are best fixed with the cummins rather than trying to fix them with anything else but till you do the 454 works pretty good.

I say put the new 6.2 in the Jimmy and I'm not sure what it cost to build the 454 but I just picked up a 1 owner Dodge with a NV4500 and a bunch of new parts on the engine, new head, IP pump, lift pump and injectors for 1350.00 the truck does have 280k and has a little blow by but runs and drives great. I guess what I'm saying is keep your eyes open for a deal on a Dodge truck that has all the parts you need, it my be cheaper than rebuilding the 454 in the long run. The Dodge could be parted with just the axles and scrap for all my $$$ back but I will just resale it whole for a significant profit:waytogo:

Nice to hear good opinions on this guys, thanks.

Yah David the search for a cummins continues but I usually don't have the money to spend when the deals come up.

I have found a couple with bad transmissions for around a grand, but if I would have had a grand I would have finished the 454.

All it needs is heads. I have new accesories for it a serpentine belt setup, intake manifold, headers, got to rebuild the carb and decide on ignition but those are the only things I need to buy.

So keep on saving rock the 454 until the cummins comes around

I hear ya on not having cash but I'm with sixb, I bought my '94 12 valve cummins 5 speed 4x4 for $2,200 and it's been a daily driver since day one.
If I had to pick from what you have I'd go 454.

Id go with the 454 fow now, just for ease of getting everything going.

I have towed with a turbo 6.2L and it does just fine. Absolutely run gauges on it though, cause the EGTs can get out of hand really fast. I ran 4.56 gears and 35s for a while in my old K10 with a N/A 6.2L and it was actually fairly peppy with an NV4500.

The 454 will probably have more pulling power, but way less mileage. It will fair better with heat than the 6.2L turbo too.

I've got a '95 12v in my garage that you might be interested in. Well I should say most of the core pieces left. Like block crank head all together still. But parts have been robbed to go to ppumping this 6.7L I've got. So you're not too far away I think. And we can make a reasonable deal.on it I think. You can piece it back as you like 1 piece at a time. Or what ever. It's not hurt, it wad the one I had I'm that 98 crewcab dually Chevy before. Now I've robbed parts from it. But still a good core.

Drop the turbo in the Jimmy, and 454 when finished in the dually :deal:

What you're going through is similar to what I went through. I had the stock 350 700 trans and 4.56 gears in a 10 bolt.

Driving around town was fine but towing was an exercise in frustration!!!! I ended up breaking the 10 bolt. So that came out and 14 bolt went in with 5.13 gears. That improved thing but it still sucked. That motor came out and a 383 went in. New motor made a world of difference. I can accelerate up hill towing while in overdrive without much effort. If I didn't already have the 5.13's 4:56's would probably be perfect. I think I spin about 3000 rpms doing 70

My dream truck right there

I wonder how a turbo'd 6.2 would like the sm465. seems like you would loose boost between the shifts. I am swapping in a turbo'd 6.2 in my sm465'd k10 soon but have no experience driving that setup. I heard with the manual the 6.2 is woken up a bit. I do have another turbo'd 6.2 that came out of a dually with over 250,000 towing 5th wheel trailers so they can't be that bad. Guy said it towed well. It had a th400 and 4:10's.

If you want the cummins why not swap the turbo motor in the jimmy and sell the jimmy's 6.2 and sell the 454? Probably won't get much cash out of the 6.2 and incomplete 454 but might get enough for a donor truck. If not either motor would be easy to put in the dually.

Eric I love myBanks turboed 6.5 in my V3500 plenty of power great mileage. Itsevery bit as powerful as stock 12 valve cummins auto.

I want to swap my NV4500 into it for the O/D and less parasitic loss over the TH400.

It should be noted that my truck doesn't smoke at all and the Pyro has never gone over 900 I could turn the fuel up and gain more power but as of yet it hasn't been needed .

To date the most weight I've towed has been a my 7200 lbs CUCV on a 3500 lbs Bumper pull . and It has no trouble maintaing speed and climbing hills .

When I hauled a certain orange truggy to Moab once at 4am, my 6.5L turbo diesel Tahoe was leaving a stock early Cummins truck in the black smoke :haha:

They pull just fine, just don't compare them to a modern diesel engine.
