motors hmmmmmmmmmmm

Yep They do really well for what they are and the mileage is awesome, I average about 20mpg my best tank was 22 and my worst was 8. that being said I do drive like a grandpa

I wonder how a turbo'd 6.2 would like the sm465. seems like you would loose boost between the shifts. I am swapping in a turbo'd 6.2 in my sm465'd k10 soon but have no experience driving that setup. I heard with the manual the 6.2 is woken up a bit. I do have another turbo'd 6.2 that came out of a dually with over 250,000 towing 5th wheel trailers so they can't be that bad. Guy said it towed well. It had a th400 and 4:10's.

If you want the cummins why not swap the turbo motor in the jimmy and sell the jimmy's 6.2 and sell the 454? Probably won't get much cash out of the 6.2 and incomplete 454 but might get enough for a donor truck. If not either motor would be easy to put in the dually.

The gear spacing is very similar between an SM465 and an NV4500 :deal:

That is a good point forgot all about the 6.5 with factory turbo and nv4500 combo. I have never driven one of those.

I have also heard good things about the fluid dampers but they are pricey.

It was actually Russel towing me the rest of the way to Moab that I started really considering the 6.2/6.5 as a motor for the crew cab.

In all reality though I would like that turbo motor in the Jimmy. It will work well in the application. The 454 is going to get finished I might also have a line on a couple 454s that run pretty darn good for dang close to free.

I think a modern diesel swap or a even a newer 6.5 built properly will eventually make its way in there.

I am not a power hungry type of guy at all but I want it to be able to pull hills without a problem and we have some good ones pretty close.

Right now after adding all the costs up with everything the best thing for me to do is finish the 454. It will be a completely new motor. Really won't get driven a ton just towing and in all reality I will probably still use the Jimmy to tow if I am only going 40 miles or less.

Blazinzuk, sounds like you got a good plan. If you do decied on a 6.2/6.5 in the future for the crew I would check out dieselplace if you have not already. There is a good wealth of info over there specific to these diesels. Certain blocks ("redblock" and 509 casting) are less prone to main web cracks and add ons such as stud girdles and head studs can improve the durability of the 6.2/6.5. I have also heard after 2000 AM General started producing an improved 6.5 block (the optimizer 6500) that has supposibly corrected some of the earlier issues with a bettercrank and incorperated block gurdle. Acording to AM General this version is rated @ 205 hp and 440 tourque. I have yet to see one of these motors in person tho. Course a 6bt would probibly get more bang for your buck.......

Most don't, that's why it happens all the time.

Is there something that goes wrong with them that you can see? I have had lots of 6.2 6.5 motors and never a broken crank, but I have seen several and I couldnt see anything wrong with the balancer.

OR... are we talking about the crankshaft pulley (the rubber filled one.

This is the main reason I gave up on my 6.5 motors, get a long way from home and break a crank, you are screwed big time.

Does anybody know if the scat crank for these motors is supposed to be better?

The balancers come apart and you lose the crank, simple as that.

One of the reasons my turbo motor is not put in yet I want to get a new balancer for it before I stab it in. Will probably replace it every now and again as part of general maintenance

The reason I asked is because I have seen several with broken cranks, that the balancer looked perfect.

On one guys truck, he re used his balancer (from 6.5 with 95k on it an a broken crank) and put over 200k on the next motor.

The harmonic balancer doesn't actually have to physically fly apart. If it stops absorbing the harmonics of the engine, The crank will fail or the webbing will crack. It might look ok, but its not doing its job.

I vote to finish the 454 and get it going. I dont see much sense in doing things twice but, i understand you dont have much of an option at this point. Have you thought of off loading the dually and the Jimmy and just getting a tow rig that can pull double duty? Maybe a used Dodge or a used Chevy. You said you like your stable now but, maybe a change is in order anyways.

LT.

I can't afford a car payment and even offloading the Jimmy and the dually wouldn't get me enough money to buy anything with less than a billion miles on it.

Shoot even older powerstroke fords go for 6k around here.

I am sure I could find something but the Jimmy tows local just fine. Right now I don't have the money to make any big trips and like I said I really like my stable. I will get them all working and running good eventually :haha::haha:

I really like my 6.2 despite its low power, I hope the turbo will make a big difference.

Yah me too. I am really pretty excited to get my turbo motor into the Jimmy.

I do like the NA 6.2 but it is a dog and you can't argue that at all
