mounting fairlead

It mounts to 2 of the mounting bolts for the winch. On an 8274 the winch mounts to the front of the bumper where the fairlead is attached not to the bottom of the bumper.

huh.....mine is mounted to the front of the bumper....i don`t think that there is mounts as there really isnt a bottom to my bumper..maybe only like a 3 inch plate....is it possible that i have an older m12k that mounts the the front???

I think with new winches they can mount any direction but with an 8274 they pretty much only mount 1 way.:D I think the mount spacing for the new winches are too wide to use the same fasteners for a fairlead. I could be wrong though.

ok my winch mounts to the front and the bottom...i must be stupid for not understanding the whole bolt up a plate but i think i`m going to just bolt up a plate and then bolt up a hawse fairlead

and while i have your attention....would it be worth turning in my old winch cable down the scrap yard or just toss it???....would i get anything for it?

I would just get a piece of 1/4" or what ever thickness your bumper is. As far as turning the cable in for scrap you would prolly not get anything for it but it is better to have it recycled than rusting away in a landfill.:D

before i go ahead and call it a plan...would there be any way i could just round out the edges of the opening of my bumper using my angle grinder..then sand em real smooth??wouldnt it function the same way as the hawse fairlead would?

Just guessing, but I think that could really depend on what that bumper is made of. Seems to me that the cable could rub grooves in the bumper metal if it's too soft or too thin (so too thin an edge). The steel hawse I got (which I never used as I went to synthetic rope and a much smoother aluminum hawse fairlead) was about 3/4" thick IIRC and rounded. Something to check into anyway.

the part of the bumper where the opening is measures 1/4 inch...im just having trouble finding out how to cut up a plate

If there's room between the bumper piece and the winch, maybe you could just get some plate on either side of the hole welded on there. If you had that done, then you could just drill out the holes for the fairlead. If you wanted it to look like part of the bumper and not recessed, cut some 1/4" tabs in the shape of the hole at the sides, weld that onto the ends of the hole, grind off the excess and you'd have the correct sized hole and strong sides to mount your fairlead.

Plate cutting is a combo of chop saw, sawzall and/or cut off wheel on an angle grinder. Or a talented friend with tools.
