MPG Thread, curiosity

never seen that and don't know what its doing really:dunno: according to that diagram the power going through the choke light will still have power to the choke wether that switch is made or not. every electric choke ive ever seen on an aftermarket carb just went to switched 12v and that's it. oh well

everyday driving no highway speeds 9mpg.
towing 10K at 63mph (seems to be the sweet spot)...6mpg
towing 10K at 75mph (in a hurry to get home) the fuel needle moves so quick you can literally watch it (20gal side saddle tanks)

Its just meant to keep the choke from coming on until the engine is running. Mine is actually wired up the way you said but the diagram is how they came from the factory...

it would still come on before the engines running by that diagram... it shows 2 fuses so 2 different 12v keyed sources going to the same place by the way I read it. :dunno: I read electrical prints for a living and that one confuses me

88 K5 new gm 350 tbi, rebuilt 700r4, 4.88, 35" mud tires and 6" lift. 10 mpg average with freeway and city mixed driving.

79 C20 Camper special 3/4 ton pickup. 406 sbc edelbrock performer 600 cfm carb, ported edelbrock intake, ported edelbrock heads, roller cam, full roller rockers, 10.2:1 CR, MSD HEI ignition, thorley tri y headers, 3" cat, flowmaster 70 series, th400, gearvendors overdrive, 14bff 4.10, disc brake conversion, 33" all terrain tires. Estimated 525 torque, never dynoed. 8.5 mpg mixed city and freeway. 10 mpg at best on mostly freeway commutes. I can't keep my foot out of it either. Towing a 9k pound trailer that is 11.5' tall gives me 5-6 mpg, of course balls to the wall. It needs a bigger carb such as the qjet I have, but I doubt it will help mileage, just peak power when towing or when I get the rpms up there.

The oil pressure switch is NO. It closes when the engine starts and pressure comes up. The circuit with the lamp does not flow much current through the choke coil. That bulb is a lot higher resistance than the coil, which is why it lights up pretty well when the switch is open. In practical use, I've always considered it more of an oil pressure warning light than to tell you anything about the choke.

Wow I wanna see a few pics :)

I have been fantasizing about building a nice restored older blazer with a 4bt for a driver.

I haven't tried computating the exact MPG my 6.2 diesel gets in my pickup, but I can say if I put 20 bucks worth of fuel in it (about 4.7 gallons),its about 50 miles later ,that the fuel gauge is right back where it was when I filled it--the cold starts ,stop & go city driving,& short trips I do (rarely over 10 miles at one time) and overall cold weather really kills the fuel mileage, just as it does in a gas powered vehicle...so I'd guess I'm getting about 11-12 mpg?...

It gets a bit better in warmer weather, but not all that much...maybe 16 mpg tops..maybe it could use a new air filter, but it looks pretty clean still, and I'd rather spend the 10 bucks on diesel that a filter that probably wont increase the mpg much...

choke should just have a keyed 12v going to it and a ground.... that's it.

So we have determined that my carb in desperate need of a rebuild. It is so warped that not even a new gasket between intake manifold and carb stops the vacuum leak. The previous owner had it running so rich, its amazing it would even run! New carb is on the way, I am up to about 8 mpg, and thats mostly driving 2 miles to work and 2 miles back every day. I need to set the timing, as my rig is dieseling. Regardless, I am getting better mileage that I was before!

Everything in my signature plus full length headers and I think I have about 7 inches of lift. With 4.10 gears my cam is at the very edge of the power band at 60 mph so I use 4th gear a lot.
I am still tuning my truck avenger also.

6-7 mpg city
10 mpg highway is the best I have gotten. And that was completely 100% highway.

Looking at your signature you have too much carb for that motor. Also a 327 block is the same as a 350 block having 4.000" bores. So your motor is a bored over 350. The largest carb you should be running is a 670, but I would lean closer to a 600 for low end torque and fuel economy.
