MUCV(Multi-Purpose Utility Command Vehicle)...The Dirtybus...

Well, it started raining here today...

I got the frame for the side door out and was cutting metal to fill it last night when I heard the weather report on the news... So, I threw the windows back in temporarily on the passenger side and taped plastic over the big hole I just made in the side of my bus...

I had to deal with school schedules for the kids this morning then started on the inside rivets... God I hate rivets...

I was cutting the head off with a cut off wheel at first, then hit it with a hammer and punch... That was working, but I soon realized how many cut off wheels I was gonna go threw and started to rethink my technique...

I tried getting a saw-z-all blade behind the sheet and cut the shaft of the rivet with no luck...

I went back to the cut straight into the head and attack with the air chisel... Taking way to long and my hand is numb...

Using a cutting torch doesn't seem like a good idea, because they are galvanized sheets and fiber glass insulation behind that...

Anyone have any ideas??? I've got hundreds more to go and at this rate I could make a career out of rivet removal with no retirement in the near future...

There's got to be a better way... I'm open to just about anything right now...

The guys on TV (TRUCKS) suggest cutting an "X" on the head, then hit it with the air chisel. They are really proud of this technique. The TV makes it look 10 x's easier than reality tho...

Drill the rivet with a bit that is close to the shank diameter. If you have a good sharp quality bit, it's quite easy. When you get past the head, get out a man hammer and a pointed chisel to fit inside the hole you just drilled. Now pound it. Forget stepping the bits. Just use a big sharp one. I used a sweet cobalt Dewalt bit.

Worked on my rivets doing my shackle flip quite easily. I have done it the air chisel and the grind an X method and the drill worked better.

Forget the snow chains. try these...

Dirty Goat you inspire me. I was thinking about what your dad told you about welding, don't worry about burning a hole in something because it can always be fixed. I did just that; practiced welding, burned right thru, then fixed it. I'm glad to see you keep the kids involved in your builds & believe it or not you can learn from them too. Sometimes a fresh set of eyes & a young mind can come up with solutions to problems you may have never considered. Just get 'em some dang safety glasses!:grind:

Damm, Thats a cool bus! I would be happy to ride that short bus!!

its been a while, How does she tow? Is maintenence on a medium duty vehicle pricey or about the same as any other tow rig/RV?

Seems like some posts went missing on the board lastnight...:dunno:

I haven't towed with it yet... Took some time off over the holidays and just now getting back to working on the bus...

I got the clear lenses for the upper lights today...

Also got the cot replacement material last week...

A huge thanks to Dan(basher13) for hooking me up with a bunch of stuff...

He let me tear the inside out of a motorhome over the last couple of weeks... I grabbed just about everything I could... I'll post up some pics of what I pulled from the Winnie a little later...

Here's the lenses... They should light up camp really nicely...

Got the new clear lenses on... I have to figure out what wires make them work... When the bus was decommisioned they pulled all the toggles that work the safety stuff that's ony legal to use on school busses... So, I need to figure out which one works them and remove the flasher...

I like the way they look...

They should light up camp pretty good... Haven't lit them of yet, have to figure out the wiring...

Picked up a couple of seats out of a Dodge van from a good friend of mine, thanks Rick...

They lay down into beds... Have seat belts for 6... Really good shape, but an ugly red... I'll paint the bases and look into seat covers...

They measure 54" long, so I can't face them forward because it wouldn't leave enough space to get around them with the galley in place... So, I plan on mounting them where they are sitting and build an end table between them...

Very cool....like an icicle

It'll be like a living room!

I don't think the seatbelts would be beneficial except in a side rollover scenario. Seems to me that a sudden stop while moving forward would cause more harm than good. :dunno:

Nice score otherwise. You could dye them.

all RVs have the seats facing that way, the seatbelts are an improvement no mater what. My dad's rv has seatbelts in one of the benches that face sideways, the others do not.

I got the rest of the exterior lights the other day, so everything is led now... Well, except for the upper flashers front and rear, they are seal beams... Took all the marking lights apart and painted the backing plates black, they were white and couldn't find any with black...

It's almost ready to start driving... I'll be working on the inside while it's being used for towing duty... I don't mind throwing some gear and coolers in the thing and sleeping on an army cot for now...

I'm trying to get it down to the emissions place this week, the lighting thing was keeping that from happening... Up here we've had the coldest and wettest April on record... This entire winter sucked, making it really hard to want to work on anything outside...
