I'd really like to do both but cash is limited as usual so I have to pick one to do first... BIG horsepower 500+... OR some nasty gears and the stock tbi motor. Running 40 inch tires 4.10 gears and locked all around now and in low range it can keep up but nowhere near competitive. Any input is appreciated thank u.

Gears. Because 4.10 is not even close to the gearing you want on 40s.

I'd go 5.38s.

And gears will be vastly cheaper than a motor...

If your running half ton axles....

You are gonna want 1 tonw to run that much tire with that much gear.

I did the 500hp motor first, and I wasn't all that impressed

Now I have 5.13's and it's a night and day difference :eek1:

350/700r/208, I have a sm465 set up with a 208. and one with a np205 but hesitant to swap it in cause of potential clutch mud issues

If it were mine....

I'd buy the motor first. Gears will help a lot but *to be competitive* you need wheel speed - a lot of it. Run low range and up shift if it will do it without lugging.

If it was me Id go with the motor and find a 400turbo/208 combo to put behind it, Ive been running a 305(yea I know)/400t/208 in my truck with 4.10's and it did alright but Im swapping in a fuel injected 4.8. Ive never had a problem spinning the tires just running out of motor....
