Mud racing season has begun. I bought a rolling chassis this winter that was already 4 linked to o build with my drivetrain instead of 4 linking my 85 Chevy that i have been racing. The way I got it was 1 tons, which the 14 bff needed a pinion bearing, 4 linked, roll cage and the body skins.

Been working on it pretty much none stop. The coilovers shocks I ordered were 3 weeks late. They got here Thursday and our first race was Sunday. We worked many hours to get it ready.

How much lighter is it than the '85? Does the wheelbase difference feel weird?

The old truck weighed about 4500 lb with just roller tires on it, verified at the scrapyard before I disassembled it.

Before I ordered the coilovers for this one we got a good estimate of about 3000lb, with a homemade scale using bathroom scale and 4' bar to divide the weight.

It does feel different, and will transfer weight better once I tune the shocks and get the spring weights right. They are a bit to stiff right now and it is sitting too tall. I had it figured for sitting lower so it would transfer weight more then it did.

Not sure about the full hydro steering, there is no feel to it at all. I drove it Sunday morning for the first time, took it for a rip up the road and almost rolled it, then put it on the trailer and off to the races.

great vids thanks for sharing...more power to ya! I hate mud, how do you clean up afterwards, firehose?

washing is the worst part. some places have a place to wash off, other don't and we have to do it at home with a big pressure washer.

one place has a trash pump in a wash off pond with a 1" outlet, it cleans it off real quick. this truck has the frame boxed in so not much mud collects like the old one.

depends on the mud too, how sticky it is, sometimes we bring home wheel barrow loads of mud.

That definitely brings the suck. Anything else broke?

Uh oh, hopefull it isn't anything else too? If it is just that I would replace them all, once one of them goes they all start to go shortly after. I've never seen anyone break one of the steel crowers before.

What did you change between the first and 2nd run on the vid in post #3, first one sounds like it's missing and then the 2nd one sounds nice and mean! :woot:

Also, if these are timed races why did the guy right after you first run go slo slow and then get into it after he was in the deeper stuff. Was he afraid to get muddy water in his engine? I thought you guys would have stuff to prevent that?

By the way, that was the shortest summary of linking a truck I have ever seen. Truck looks good. :waytogo:

Sweet vids, keep them coming.

i changed the plug the other nite and it's a pain to do because they have to be indexed so the ground strap doesn't hit the piston. so i fired it up last nite and now how i check to make sure everything is good, i use a temperature gun to verify my work was good. #4 cylinder wasn't coming up to temp. pulled plug, it was good, installed another, same deal. cleaned distributor, put another plug to ground and made it was firing.

pulled valve cover after a phone call to a friend. found that laying on the head. that was from #4 exhaust. then realized #4 intake, the pushrod and lifter were not in their holes. we think we can see them laying under the intake. these were solid lifters and are supposed to be linked. i'll be pulling the intake tonight.

folkenheath - the first run, it was missing, not sure why. i didn't change anything between rounds. that was the first pass after sitting all winter and really running it.

yes, timed races. some of the trucks got updated and they were scared of them. i'll watch the videos and see who it was. yes, we (most) all have mud guards built all around to prevent mud splashing on critical parts. that was one of the women drivers, she was stimid because she rolled that truck over last year.

this is a different chassis then i ran last year. cheaper and easier then 4 linking my old one.

cam is screwed, needs some push rods, lifters, rockers.

taking the heads to get looked at. gonna get the bottom end checked out too.

Think it all stemmed from the broken rocker or did you find another cause?

i think it was from too much valve lash., broke the rocker, pushrod came out and got ingested by the #8 cam lobe. i'll have to post up the pics.

my one buddy/engine builder (not of this engine) thinks a valve hit a piston #4 and broke the rocker from over revving.

that could be, cause i drive by feel, not gauges!

Man that really sucks. Be sure to post the rebuild and if you do any upgrades.
