I've been meaning to do this for a while but I rarely sit down at the computer desk long enough to put something like this together. Since I have the week off (covid) I figured now is the time.

I moved to Minnesota in July of last year and immediately started buying parts, taking advantage of the cheaper prices on axles and stuff here in the Midwest. I grabbed a 14 bolt, then an engine and a dana 60 before the summer was over. In November of last year I drove to Wisconsin and picked up a Jesse Haines 2 seat chassis kit from Goatbuilt and grabbed a th400 on the way home. Choosing this chassis wasn't a quick decision, I looked at Fabn801, Bent fabrications, Bomber fab and Goatbuilt. I've been a Jesse Haines fan since the late 90s and Goatbuilt's JHF chassis always stuck out as a top contender. It wasn't the cheapest option but offered the best support with GB selling fuel tanks, interior panels, LS accessory brackets, drivetrain mounts, etc. One of the deciding factors was the 54" width of this chassis vs most of the trail buggy chassis out there coming in at 48." I'll be running +2 wide PRP seats and the rock lizards and bombers wont allow that.

These chassis can be assembled by anyone with competent welding & fabrication skills. After building Daisy, rebuilding the Toyota and building tons of stuff for customers at work I was more than comfortable putting this thing together. The fixture kit the Jesse developed for this chassis helps a lot, no way I'd try this without it. Throughout the whole process I only needed a second set of hands 2-3 times. As of right now the chassis is welded and I'm working on building the axles, from there I'll start on link bars and brackets. Once the axles and links are sorted out I'll mount the drivetrain. My Atlas is still a month or so out and I have to rebuild the TH400 and clean up the LQ4 so I'm not in a hurry there. No further interior work will be done on the chassis til the drivetrain and shifters are figured out.

Drivetrain plan:
LQ4 with Holley Terminator system, maybe an upgraded cam.
TH400 with a reverse/manual valve body and a 2400ish stall converter
Atlas, driver drop, 4.3 low range, 1350 yokes
14bolt with an ARB, 5.38s, maybe Yukon chromoly axles, shaved, trussed, stock disc brakes
05+ dana 60 with a spool, 5.38s, Branik 40spl chromoly axles with 1550 joints, trussed, JHF hi-steer with full hydro steering
1350 drivelines with a mid-ship carrier on the front shaft.

Hell yeah Scott. I’ve been watching this bad boy come together. I’ve got the yj in the garage I’m going to “buggy” out. Going to use the Motobilt 4-link center that Is on JHF ride. Look forward to the updates. Stay warm brother!
 
Lets start with some photos of the chassis going together. I built a rectangular base to build the chassis off of per GB's instructions and used 4 Sumner jack stands to level it. The frame rails are tacked to the base and the fixture kit locates everything from there. As mentioned, I wouldn't do this without that fixture kit, it helps a ton! The fitment of all the tubes in this kit is awesome! It even says in the instructions that if you have to grind a tube to fit, you're doing it wrong. Everything is CNC cut & bent for a perfect fit. The chassis is mostly 1.75" .120 wall tube with pieces of 1.5" in non structural places and .188 wall for the sliders, the subframe is 1.5" .188 square tube. The interior panels and roof panel are aluminum and the winch mount is 1/4" steel.

So not a lot has happened lately, it’s been super cold and I’m waiting on a lot of big parts. I started in on my axle housings a while back so we’ll post that. As mentioned above I’m running an 05 sd60 and a late model 14 bolt. The gears and lockers are on a shelf in the garage, I haven’t ordered the front shafts yet and I’m still trying to decide what I’m doing about rear shafts. I might keep the stock 14b shafts in there, not sure if chromos are worth it.

On the front I’m using a Motobilt truss/hydro steer mount. It’s a beefy unit that provides tons of structure and has a couple cool features built in. I’m combining that with a Barnes4WD cover to round out the armor package for the front axle. As you all (probably) know, these superduty 60s require a lot of trimming to be useful. I did most of that at work where we have an 85a plasma cutter and a forklift. It took about 6hrs to trim the front housing. The 14bolt got a Barnes 13 bolt cover, pro series short truss and a pinion guard/bridge that doesn’t come close to working with the truss that it’s supposed to work with. I’ll probably trim it down to a regular pinion guard and order an Artec backbone truss. That accomplishes two goals, 1; it ties the diff housing to the tubes just like a pinion guard bridge, 2; it looks racecar as hell. The rear just needed to have the oem shock mounts, spring perches and parking brake parts removed, no big deal. After trimming I had them both sandblasted at Twinstick off road just down the road.

So that’s where the axles are at for now. Once I get a few things welded on and I get a bunch of expensive bolts in the mail I’ll toss these things under the chassis and start setting up links. Stay tuned!

Sweet man. What joints are you going to run on your links?
 
Ruffstuff chromoly heims, 1.25” lowers, 7/8” uppers. I’d like to do aluminum links but I’m sure I’ll start out with DOM steel.
Right on. I’m trying to decide what I’m going to do on mine. I would think heims with high misalignment spacers would have more angle limit than say a Johnny joint right?

Yeah they do. Johnny joints are a better choice of it’s going to be street driven as they’re quieter but heims offer more angle.
 
@muddysub Is this going to be triangulated 4-link on the front or parallel with a track bar?

Thanks man, there are a few spots I plan on going back and “fixing” where the welds don’t look as nice as I’d like. I’m trying to push myself to be better on this build. I’m excited to get into things like drivetrain, radiator and fuel cell mounting.
