Muddysub's Toyota crawler.

I got a wild hair up my ass this afternoon and decided to pull the rear axle. I cleaned the garage up some, pulled it and tossed it up on the table. Well I didn't really toss it, I tried to lift it up there by myself and it started falling toward the expensive toolbox and I quickly abandoned that effort. I ended up using the cherry picker.
It came apart rather quickly, these little axles are so easy to work on. I even had to google how to remove the drums and still had it out of the truck and disassembled in a couple hours. I found exactly what I expected, broken teeth. The pinion has a big bald spot on it and there are a few teeth missing from the ring as well. I'll get parts ordered tomorrow, I'll see if I can sneak in some diff armor while I'm at it.

This thing was a lot of fun to ride in. It makes me want a smaller truck for the trail.

it may be blasphemy here but years ago a bought a buggy I called the conglomeration. it was a Toyota frame with a Samurai cab on it, 229 Chevy V6, T-350 with dual Toyota cases. one linked in the rear on Fox shocks and leafs up front on Toyota axles. that thing was a blast. easy to tow. lightweight, light on the trails

A few pages back @Fastereddie mentioned that he had a clamshell puller I could borrow. Today I figured out that he lives about 1.25mi from me so I went up there and grabbed it from him. Had a good time bullshitting about trucks too. I couldn't wait, I had to try it out. I have got to get me one of these! I was able to make setup bearings out of these old ones so this job will be easier in the future.

From what sweetk30 says and I have read you really don't need setup bearings with this tool.

Suppose to remove a new bear without damaging it. ECGS used on my pinion other day.

Going to by cheaper version not Yukon don't have the bank for that!

You are correct. Definitly don't "need" to make setup bearings, but they are handy.

Yeah I wouldn't need them with this tool but this tool isn't mine. I'm sure there will be more yota diffs in my future so I'll have a set for when I need them.

Gear parts will be here Monday, Yukon 29spline 5.71s, setup kit, wheel bearings & seals.
So I tore the brakes apart yesterday, it reminded me how much I hate drum brakes. Holy shit there are so many small parts, what a joke! I bought new shoes and wheel cylinders as one of them was blown. Can't wait to see if the thing stops worth a shit afterwards.
Wheeling around Moab on those stickies has me thinking really hard about hydro assist. I've got a wheeling trip the first weekend of November on red sandstone and it would be really nice to be able to steer when/where I want. I've been looking around at kits online and stumbled across an article on the marlin crawler forum about piecing it together your self so I did some digging and came up with this. Including spares, this is all the parts I'd need for it. $122.99 shipped, surpluscenter.com. I can build the brackets and tap the box myself. I should be alright with a pin/clevis style cylinder right? The tie rod travels on a pretty level plane, I can't imagine there would be enough side to side (or up/down in this case) movement to cause any binding issues.

I have a the ball end Ram from surplus center along with their cheap hoses on the Willys. It works great back when I had it in the road, other than having to cut off the end, rotate it, and re weld it to get The hoses in a good spot. I have no idea about the pin one. Toy boxes are super easy to tap too.

This is why I'm glad the brakes are good in the 66 seeing as how it's all drums. Some day I'm sure I'll have the pleasure though.

You sure make buying a Yoga crawler sound tempting.

It fits everywhere and the ground clearance is awesome. Only two people though, and not tall ones haha!

I'm bummed that it was filmed in portrait mode so it's not high definition, but I put together a little video of the yoter running around Moab.

Edit: deleted the video, the new one is better.

After watching that video on something larger than an iPhone I'm not really happy with it. So I'm working on another. Stay tuned.

We have problems with people reviewing their sign drawing proofs on a phone which doesn't work very well when you're looking at a drawing for a 6'x10' sign on a 2"x4" screen.

You are lacking sweet exhaust noise in your video...oh wait its a TOYOTA, they sound like rice burners. :haha:

I see you were following the giant Tahoe for a bit. I kept waiting for it to tip over on Hell's Revenge last year.

Yeah there's no way to make a 4banger sound good so I'm glad mine is fairly quiet.
That big blazer (it's not a Tahoe) impressed me. It's super tall but it never looked like it was close to going over.

Second one is better I think. And remind me to not ride with you. I was nervous just watching. Lol.
You lift tires like I lift beers.
