Muddysub's Toyota crawler.

I got a duel optima battery box from Ruff Stuff sitting in my shop doing nothing. If you decide on an optima and need a box..I also have 2-12? inch electric fans on a bracket that fit a chevy radiator..pretty sure I got a chevy flex fan out there somewhere too

Its a first generation so the top is all one piece. You could cut it down for a single or use the other side for storage

Did you get the BBQ bottle filler option with the gotpropane kit? well worth it..lets you run a BBQ bottle or BBQ tank in an emergency or as a reserve.

I got the propane kit used along with the engine, didn't come with the BBQ adapter. I'll pick one up. Hey does that adapt to a 5gal BBQ tank or the little green ones for a camp stove?

I actually ordered a battery box from TG last night, along with a steering hose kit and some more FJ80 tie rod ends. I'm going to do some more digging around for that engine fan. I'll let you know.

It's alive! I double checked the distributor when I got home, it was right, I was just paranoid. I rolled under the truck when the one of the propane tanks to hook it up, cranked it for a second and it fired right up! I still have no cooling system or power steering lines so I've only run it for maybe 3 minutes. I got the timing adjusted a little, just by sound, I don't have a timing light.

you'll like those FJ80 ends...way stronger.....you can hook whatever hose you want up to the T-bulkhead fitting. the fitting is the important part. then you can hook up any hose to that...I have a BBQ extension hose on mine. Then you just buy the adapter to fill the green bottles off a BBQ tank and screw that into the hose end when you wanna use the green bottles. A 20 pound tank (5 gallon) was kinda big for my buggy space wise. I found a super cute little 10 pounder at Bi-Mart that I'm using as a reserve/emergency/hey go get me some propane tank.

I'm mounting two tanks in the bed for now. If it turns out I don't need the second one I'll take it out.

I relocated the battery to accommodate the propane tanks and the the steering fluid reservoir up a little higher to accommodate the new hoses. I also successfully tapped out the hole in the gear box. That's about all I got done though. I didn't realize that trail-gear's steering hose kit requires adapter fittings to connect them to the gear box so that's not done. It was hot out there, I was tired from doing yard work and motivation was low.

So right now I'm waiting on my engine fan, steering fittings and steering cooler to come in. I want all that stuff done before I put the radiator in because it's really easy to work on right now. I guess I'll clean up some of the fins on the radiator while I'm waiting on all this stuff.

I mounted the power steering cooler today, the fittings came in so I also ran all the plumbing. The fan should be here tomorrow, then I can install the radiator and shroud, fill the cooling system and drive this thing.

I'll probably grab some 1/4" hardware at work tomorrow to replace those self tappers.

I need to do something with that distributor wire and get a couple more hose clamps.

The Toyota is alive! I made the fan shroud work with some sheet metal and extra hardware, installed my new fan, dropped the radiator in and filled the cooling & power steering systems. I also cut a hole in the bed floor (with a grinder) for the propane hose, after a 2.5" hole saw broke my Makita 18v cordless. I idled the truck for about 30min, the fan clutch failed, shut it down at 200* and the fan free wheels. So I bought a new one and drained the radiator before cleaning up for the night. Tomorrow I'll yank the radiator and swap out the fan clutch. Then it's time for a test drive.

You have to pull the rad to change the fan clutch?
Must be a Toyota thing....

Yep, one piece shroud, can't pull the shroud out without pulling the radiator. I swapped that out this morning, took me a little while to get all the air out of the cooling system but once I did it stays around 190*. I took it for a spin around the neighborhood and it runs better than it ever did with the old engine. It's so much smoother, it's still a slow little tractor but it runs really good now.

There a couple things that I need to take care of. I've got an exhaust leak at the header gasket, I'll have to check the torque on the header flange. And I can't get it to idle below 1000rpm right now. The idle speed screw is all the way out but a part of the linkage is hitting the manifold, preventing it from closing all the way.

I installed a Remflex header gasket, that fixed my exhaust leak. I also drove the little yoter on the highway yesterday, it actually does pretty decent. I want new gouges so bad, nothing on the OEM cluster works anymore and I'm pretty sure my temp gauge is wrong. When it's reading 200*, my temp gun is reading 185* at the sending unit. Also my brake booster leaks, now that the exhaust leak is fixed I can hear it hissing. It's also causing it to crank a while before starting because the intake system is leaking through the booster. It's so tempting to buy a Wilwood dual master cylinder for it and ditch the booster altogether. It's only $100 or so more than a new booster but I'd have to do some fab work to mount it and I've got other shit to do before BB17.

So gauges and race car brakes are on the "after Moab" list. I guess those two necessitate the building of a whole new sheet metal dash. Hmmm...

Just get triple set of Auto Gauge gauges. Have run them for years and they work fine.

That's what's in it, I don't like them. When I build a new dash I'll put a set of auto meters in it.

Don't you have new tires for it too?

Yep, they're getting installed right now actually. We convoyed across town today to get some new trailer tires for the flatbed and to have the BFGs mounted on the Toyota.

Damn this little truck kicks ass now! We crawled around for 3hrs or so this morning just west of Las Vegas. The new engine seems to be perfectly happy with its new home. Temperatures stayed under 200* on the gauge, oil pressure seems good, though it idles at 10psi. I might try a heavier oil next time. The power steering works really well with the new pump, hydro assist is still planned but one thing at a time. The propane system kicks ass, I only stalled once all day and it fired back immediately! It will lug down to 400rpm and just keep going. Part of that is due to the tires. They're obviously not broken in yet but I'm really digging them so far. The truck is much more predictable, no more sliding off my line. Overall I'm totally pleased with it and much more confident in the truck than I used to be. A couple things do have to change, the tie rod hits the rod end at the pitman arm and the brake booster leaks. I'm going to add one short leaf back into the front packs and get a flatter pitman arm to open up some more up travel for now. I'll replace the booster before BB17.

Blazer bash prep is in full swing, parts are rolling in and I'm in the garage almost every night. Currently sitting in one of the yota seats on the floor in the garage waiting for paint to dry.

I picked up some steel from Metal supermarkets and built a harness bar for the shoulder belts tonight, also installed the eye bolts and lap belts. That aught to make the wife much more comfortable in the truck.

I cut out the floor around the shifters, I need to build a new tunnel cover and boot setup. I'm having a hard time finding universal shift boots that will work for me. I'd like to use rubber ones that just pop into the floor like a grommet to reduce the amount of hardware involved. If anyone has any suggestions I'll gladly listen.

If anyone wants to swing by this weekend and help, I'll be welding stuff and swapping out a bunch of parts.
