well since my engine is here and i'm collecting parts i figured i'd start a separate thread in here to document everything. there are other 5.3 swap threads but none on CK5 are done using a turnkey engine. if you look through most of them, a majority of the work is wiring, i dont have to worry about all that, ive a grand total of about 6 wires to hook up which includes A/C. i guess my thread will be more focused on the mechanical side of things, part numbers, etc....

so for those that havent seen my thread in the suburban section, here's my engine. it's a 2004 5.3l from BD Turnkey Engines in Reno NV. its got 78k miles on it and arrived to me complete with ECM, harness, engine cover to oil pan, flex plate to serpentine belt. it's DBW (drive by wire) and came with the pedal and TAC module. it also included the up stream O2 sensors for fuel mapping. Bryan at BD Turnkey, does away with the rear O2 sensors, MAF sensor and evap system in most cases. on my engine we decided to leave the pigtails for the smog equipment on and include a MAF sensor due to some smog issues a few other guys have had here in NV with engine swaps. the rear O2s, and evap are turned off in the ECM and the MAF sensor is only used as an intake air temp sensor since the engine is run in speed density rather than mass air tuning. chances are, i wont need any of the smog wiring left intact on my harness. but if for some reason i do, its there to use with a reflash of the ECM.

i'm using an AC Delco EP381 fuel pump and a WIX 33737 fuel filter. my engine does not have a return line from the fuel rails, it returns from the filter back to tank. i'm also using an engine oil cooler, the engine does not have ports for cooler lines so i'll be adding that myself. still need to research that a little and see whats needed.

ive heard that for TH350/400/700r4 transmissions most 5.3s need an adapter for the flex plate. not sure if i'll need that for my 4L80E but i'll bolt it up and find out.
adapter and bolts.

for the engine oil cooler, on my old TBI350 the cooler lines came from the filter base. my 5.3 does not have provisions for a cooler, so i'm going to use one of these. ive been told an oil cooler is not necessary but in my opinion, here in the desert, moving a 6000lb+ truck it's cheap insurance.

my friend is going to make me some motor mount adapters this week to work with the ORD competition motor mounts i have. not sure if i'll have clearance issues with the AC compressor mount, i'll have to look into that.

I got a question guys.

I installed my flex plate spacer after the flex plate and torqued the bolts down. Slapped the trans on there and I've got a 5/32" (4mm) gap from the TC to the flex plate. Obviously I could pull the TC out a little to meet up but is that ok? I can't imagine it'll hurt anything, the fords I used to work on had about a 1/16" gap before everything was bolted up. I'm guessing it's no big deal and I'm worrying about nothing.

[EDIT]

It bolts up fine. I can't see that 4mm that the TC is pulled out being a problem.

We test fit the engine today. The TNA crossmember, ORD lower mounts and custom made uppers all get along perfectly.

nice to know the intank fuel pump # he is using is the same one I got from my basic info I found.

its for the 96-97 metal tank / sender unit style vortec engine trucks .

I got mine for a 96 c3500 5.7 application .

and your setup look good.

I got the part number from y5mgisi, it's the same pump he used. I like the fact that it's an OEM part, so whatever small town I might be in if the fuel pump goes out I know I can find a replacement fairly easily.
