So, I am calling around to some places to get my exhaust system installed and they are telling me that they can't do it because it does not have converters on it, i thought it was expempt because it was older? So now what to do? I guess ill do it myself, which is fine, but i would rather just pay someone.

that sounds exceptionally like BS to me... sounds like they just don't wanna work on something old... of course they have the right to turn work down, but I'm pretty certain it has nothing to do with the legality of your truck... tho, they may imply that.. especiallly since it was a phone call... maybe a different response would have been giving if you had pulled up with it.. maybe not..

my Meineke guy rocks.. he lives to build systems for cool rides, as opposed to the drudgery of his daily late model parts interchange...

I dont have cats on mine, the muffler shop Ive used a couple times didnt bat an eye. Friend of mine called em they said no. The two of us went up there in person, chatted and they would do it. My experience has been that over the phone they will say no, but in person, pay cash, no receipt theyll do it no problems.

Could be a liability thing for them, even if yours is old enough or never came with cats. If they redo everything and at some point someone (i.e. emissions testing) wonders why it doesn't have cats, they could say that the exhaust shop removed them.

Just a guess.

This kind of proves what I was saying, they have no problem doing whatever you want as long as there is no way to trace it back to them.

Well that is interesting, i will be out today, ill hit a few places and go in inperson, and see what they say, I was also thinking that i could do it, but the best quality would be to take it to a professional im sure. So, we'll see.

yup... i can't do mandrel bending.. some stuff is better farmed out...

FWIW I built my exhaust out of pre bent pieces I bought from summitracing.com. I basically looked at what I needed and figured out roughly which bends I'd need and then did it. Cheap and easy.

oh, i know it can be done.. i'm building my y-pipe... but i'll drop it off at my guy to bend me up a tailpipe...

on a whole, it's one I feel is often best farmed out.... most times, you can get a cleaner, more perfect install with the machine, pieces made to fit, lift, etc.. but it's definitely not required...

What year is your truck. I think they started putting converters on trucks in the mid 70's. I do alot of custom exhaust work and if your truck had or is suppose to have converters its a $10,000 fine if the shop doesn't put them on.

If your still considering 3" make sure you can see what the bends are going to look like. Their machine is more than likely going to be compression and not mandrel, with the compression bends it will be tuff not to smash the pipe on 3".

Regardless if your year is now exempt it is a FEDERAL CRIME to remove any emissions equipment ever. Lots of people do it all the time but if a shop removes anything and it can be proved they did then they get a hefty fine as well as you getting one also.

thats the thing, these days there are very few times it would be a big deal to install em.. the new stuff out is tiny with no performance loss.. sure, it's gonna cost ya a few more bills for the part... but it's not the holy grail of exhaust flow killers like it may have been in the old days...

sure.... if it had no cat to begin with, i'd rather not have to install em obviously, I'm just saying it's not a huge deal to add em...

that truck is a 1 ton. so the emission laws that where in place where different than a half ton.

most half tons untill 78 had a cat, unless the engine had the H5D emissions package. the H5D had lower compression, but no egr valve a.i.r or cat and was available with dual exhaust.

all 79' half tons had cats

3/4 ton and up trucks had less strict emissions due to the higher gvwr, so factory dual exhaust and no cats where the norm.

look at the rpo sticker in the glove box. does it say dual exhaust on the sticker? i bet it does, no dual exhaust truck had a cat.

if it had a cat originally, there would be a heat shield under the truck about where the driver's seat is.

also that truck might have the original sticker on the aircleaner housing, which would say catalyst at the bottom rt corner if it was equipped.

i have seen 1 tons up until the late 80's without cats. it all depends on the gvwr.

you need to call an exhaust shop that knows wtf they are talkin about

Pull the plates off and have it towed to the muffler shop. Tell them it is a racetruck for offroad use only.

I heard about people stealing cats from under cars, so i leave mine locked in the garage at all times so nobody steals it from me. I mean, Better to prevent a crime then to give them the means to do it right?
