My 5.3 swap thread!

Yea I'm kinda forced into the budget thing. I would have liked to have done more like a cam and headers and such, but It's not in the cards for me at this time.

Max, thanks! There has been plenty of folks to have done the swap for right around 1500.

I need a budget to stop my madness and get this thing finished sooner.:doah:

Dang, I spent more then that for my motor with accessories, wire harness, and computer.

The only things mine didnt come with was the o2 sensors and alternator. I got fairly lucky, but when you break it down i paid average price for the motor but had the benefit of hearing it run. Way i think of it is like this

Best case

1000 for the package
- 80 for comp
- 75 for programing
- 120 for harness

means i paid $725 for the motor it self which isnt all that bad plus i got to hear it run and it supposedly only has 82k miles on it.

Better case

1000 package
- 80 computer
- 150 programing
- 120 harness
- 250 harness mod

means i paid 400 for the motor itself. So, depending on how you look at it, i got a pretty good deal. A motor like mine at the junk yard goes for about $675 all day. then you gotta buy the harness, computer, alternator, starter(mine had one but all the junk yard ones i found were missing) o2's and whatever all else your missing.

Yeah this build is the best right now!

Very excited for you!

Checking around a bit 5.3s for 600 to 1000 around here.

Yep thats the going rate here too. Only downside was that they had all been pillaged for starters alternators and whatever else. Combine that with the fact that the junkyard i wanted to get mine from wouldnt allow me to hand select my motor visually because it was in the warehouse thats not open to the public and the motor i got became that much more appealing.

Kinda. The flange lands right between the bottom and top of the frame rail. It itself doesnt hit. The problem is when i try to put the down pipe onto the manifold, the down pipe runs into the lower "lip" of the frame rail. I'll get pics tomorrow. I think it will be fine if i just take a little 1/2" pie cut out of the down pipe.

Thanks! My goal here is to make it a little less scary for people so i do plan on documenting everything really well. Tomorrow i plan on getting back to the wiring. Tomorrow is going to be more like a personal research day to figure out and document what all wires i have left over and what i need to do with them.

And your right! I do need to update that!

I think I cut my down pipe off and rotated till I had clearance on the frame and the o2 sensor I'll have to look in the morning make sure I didn't do a pie cut.

Ok so i have a few questions but lets start with this list, and pics. The pics are in order with the list.

These are the starter actuator and system power leads that remain uncut and will hook up like factory

This is the alternator plug which needs adapted to the new one, the system charge wire, and the temp sender wire.

The two computer connectors.
