I always drill an 1/8" hole or two in the thermostat before I put it in too.

You really dont have to drill the 1/8in holes in the stat for a BB, it has a coolant bypass right under it. I see no ill effects of doing it however.

some t-stats come with a bleader hole/floating pin in them just for this trick .
I have only ever had 1 like that.

best coolent service tool under 50 bucks in my opinion .
look around can be found a little cheeper at times.
trick is onces all done and ready to remove squeeze the upper hose a bit to force extra coolent out . then hold it and install the plug . let go of the hose and remove funnel and should be no spils as you just created a negative void so no fluid to spill over . then cap it off and drain funnel extra in over flow tank and done .
I love mine. Its the only way to properly bleed a Honda without making a mess.

It does. Mine likes 26 with the slots welded up to limit it to 38.

Yea... It wouldnt even start under 12 degrees. 
The distributor in it has 16 degrees centrifugal advance.
Gonna bump the base to 18 degrees, and see how she likes it.

I think my 396 is around 20 initial. It's well past the pointer.

My T-stat is a Mr. Gasket "high flow".
It has a bypass hole built in.

Umm...
So....
I left the cap off my radiator, and let it get to operating temp.... (180*)
Went to top it off, but it seems as soon as the T-Stat opened, it started overflowing coolant.
It overflowed in pulses, too.
Also, just out of curiosity, I put the radiator cap on and ran the fan.
It got to 195* at idle, but never any higher.
And it would drop with a little RPM raising.
Does that mean bad head gasket?
Is this "normal"?

fill it.. put the cap on... run it till it comes to temp for a bit... shutdown and let cool off.. open cap.. top off if needed...
