My build: Orange Crush

After driving my 82 blazer as a stocker, I've decided for him to undergo a mild "restoration". Don't worry tho! He will still see ample trail time!
Had a little time at work to fiddle with the blazer today. I got the whip mounted, and the cb wired. Waiting on an extended bracket to arrive. This thing is a hotrodded squawk box, it puts out over 30 watts, I can pick up traffic as far off as New Jersey, Wisconsin, and Louisiana! I can communicate comfortably at up to 200 miles while on a mountain, on a clear night.

Although I didn't take pics, I had the carb off this morning. Had to remove the airhorn to raise the float level a little bit. I ran out of fuel on a 35* incline a couple nights ago, and needed a little more. While I had the airhorn off, I drove out the lead plug that blocks the APT adjustment, tapped the hole 3/8x16 and installed a set screw for external adjustment. I've been fighting a mid-throttle bog since the new qjet went on, and this makes fine tuning much easier. The hesitation is almost gone, just got to tweak a little at a time. At least it's transitioning to the secondaries smoothly now.

That's a great looking blazer! Looks good in the snow.

We got snow here east of Atlanta as well, but not that much. I had to work in it instead of taking the truck out to play :(

Yeah a couple friends work for NCDOT, they haven't got to play either.

Not much going on with the blazer. I did find an old Lund visor on a suburban yesterday, scored it for $25. After a scuff and spray:20220126_091759.jpg
Got him mounted up today:

Finally found an old Hickey spare tire carrier. Had to drive 5 hours from the mountains to the coast, but I'm always down for a road trip.
Sandblasted and painted it Tuesday, got it mounted yesterday 20220203_075247.jpg20220203_075257.jpg
It came with a 8" rallye, and a primo vintage uniroyal tiger paw, still had the tits on it, and complete coverage of dry rot20220202_153706.jpg
Got a new matching bfg today20220203_160940.jpg

Nice bumper sticker!

The tire rack is cool old school. You have any problems drilling the holes. Or just Fock it!? This blazer needs this!

I would have done it too. :waytogo:

It wasn't too bad, definitely a two man job tho. One guy can't hold everything and mark holes all at once.
And thanks on the bumper sticker. I bought it at a swap meet a few years ago. It has 1978 printed on it.

Classic!

What I meant about drilling was did you feel bad about it?

So the Blazer took a back seat for a while, while I spruced up a 1st gen 4runner. But I got back to wrenching last week.
Put the old girl in rhe shop at work to install the super high-tech, super expensive Rough County lift (it was a freebie and new, don't judge).

Took a while of beating to get the cone washers loose on the steering arm. (Remember, always hit down on the steering arm!)

Got the front springs and shocks installed. Got the dreaded Carolina Squat going.

Got the rear blocks and shocks installed. God I hope those front spring settle, or else rear springs are in the near future. And 35's!

It still has some flex with the stiff ass springs

Next was the big project. Uncharted territory for me. I ordered a Holley Sniper efi system.

I decided to use Holley's hyperspark ignition system, so the sniper would also control timing. After removing the quadrajet and HEI distributor, I moved the #1 cylinder to TDC and dropped in the new dizzy.

Next, I mounted the control box and coil.

Next I installed the throttle body, and routed all the wires, taking care to avoid crossing plug wires.

Next I drilled a 3/4 hole and mounted the o2 sensor.

I fabbed a small bracket to mount the fuel pump and filters.20220507_100340.jpg
After removing the mechanical fuel pump, and installing a block off plate, I used the lower holes to mount the fuel pressure regulator. The regulator goes on the return lines from the throttle body.

Now with everything hooked up it's time to put power to the system. Answer the questions prompted on the handheld.

Now I started it and let the system learn itself.

I will post updates on how it works on and off road.

So some updates on the big orange brick; Been driving it quite frequently, despite the outrageous gas prices, the sniper is doing great. It's still learning (never really stops), but so far so good. 15mpg out of the 350/350/4.10's with 33's. I haven't got to hit the trails yet, as we are in the process of moving, and camping has had to wait a while.

I did decide the 33's weren't cutting it anymore, so I mounted some 35x12.50's on a set of ralleys.

I took the top off today for some summer driving, and to paint the bed rails and cab mating area.

Thank God there was no rust underneath.

While I was at it I decided to test the efi on inclines, and check my new ascension clearance with the 35's.

The bank is exactly 50*, and it climbed it no problem, very smooth power delivery, no jerkiness in the throttle. I didn't even spin up my grass. The hitch did drag a hair, although there is a low ditch area that contributed to it. I can't wait to get the old girl back in the woods and test it out properly.
