my day just got really bad... **update w/pics**

Re: my day just got really bad... **update got worse**

Man that blows...sorry to hear that. Is there going to be any warranty or replacement by Comp Cams? Keep us posted, and keep a smile on your face (life's too short not too), we're here if you need to vent some more.

Who told you that you didn't need guide plates?

I agree, if it was comp cam, then they need to write a check /forums/images/icons/mad.gif

Re: my day just got really bad...

actually the KIT IS THE REASON for the failure.
Comp uses junk in their kits.
I have only installed one, 268 in a SBC, and will not do that again.
the lifter falls apart taking out the motor and you say it is good he got that kit? /forums/images/icons/confused.gif
the timing chain from Comp looked real cheap as well in the kit I put in.

Re: my day just got really bad...

You should read a little more. It wasn't the kit at all that caused the failure. It wasn't any of CompCams parts that were the cause. Their failure was an effect. The failure was due to non-self aligning rockers without guideplates when the heads have a round pushrod hole instead of square.

Summit Racing is who gave me the advice. I have taken it up with them, but I am basically SOL on that end. Just dropped off a check at the shop for more than $500 for the labor they already had in it. I will tow it home tomorrow and get some pics to post of the damage. I will spend the next several months tearing it all the way down and building it up again.

BTW - It wasn't the valve spring. On the top of the lifter there is a little spring looking retainer (part of the lifter). That is what holds the lifter together. That probably broke which allowed the lifter to come apart. The plunger for the lifter is what was found in the pan.

this says to me the lifter failed. Comp provided the lifter. Comp stuff is junk.
the aligning of the rockers would have very little if any effect on the lifter life.
some engines have a fair bit of misalignment of rocker to lifter BBC 351C 429 and yet the lifters dont come apart.

your focusing on the trivial. you have a family and your going on vacation. id trade any engine for that.
