So when i got my K5 it was 3 inch all the way to the rear with no cat and no muffler. It set off car alarms as it went by stuff in the morning. I had the muffler shop throw on a 40 series single in dual out becuase they said they couldent go any bigger due to it not havin a cat.

Question is if I were to find a Center/Center 3" 50 or 70 series type of muffler could i just put it up stream of the 40? I have a Tig so i can do it myself but im just wondering if it will make any differnce. Damn thing is still so loud on the inside i cant hear my 3 year old in the back seat.

If I could get away with it without chokeing the engine It would sound like a prius.:D Crackling Jalope sounding exauhst is HORRIBLE!

Here are pics of what I am working with. The first picture is where i was thinking of sticking the 50 or 70

I would just cut out that 40 series, (loud F&$#er), and install a 50 or 70 series. I like the sound of the 50's, nice rumble, not too much noise. The 70 is even more quiet.

seriously, just need a different muffler, those 40's are loud to begin with, i had a friend with two of those on a dual exhaust setup with 3" all the way back, THAT was loud.

I had a 70 series on the Burb for awhile, it is quiet and still has that nice rumble tone to it.

Yeah, just get those headsets for every passenger.

You could always pick up a universal cat for <$50 and have the shop put that in ahead of the muffler. Less stink and much quieter - about like adding a second muffler in series. Just an idea.

i had cats and 40's on my old 1ton crew cab. hated the inside droan.

went to single 50 when thay rusted off in the rust belt i use to live in.

wow :eek1: what a drop in noise on the inside from just a 40 to 50 series swap.

but for you with blazer full body i would go min 50 or better 70 series for best chance at no major noise inside.

and the muffler you have now will resell on ebay or craigslist for 50 bucks to 70 bucks easy . i grab deal on them all the time for that range.

2.5 tail pipes will change the tone of the exhaust dramatically.3in pipes are noisy and have a choppy sound I don't like.

Yeah lose the 40 and the dual tails, (which look like 2.5"?). Totally not necessary. And if you want flowmaster again, I'd go 50 with a single 3" tail. THe 70 series are way long and cost a ton. THe quieter you go with flowmaster, the more they cost. Plus the flow is cut down so much you might as well have a stock style turbo muffler on there.

actually according to flowmaster "in theory" the quieter ones should actually flow better than the shorter ones.
the theory is that there is more noise cancelation in the longer ones, and since the noise cancelation is done by running the noise waves into each other, that would leave more room for exhaust flow.

anything without cats is going to be pretty loud with a performance muffler on.
i removed the cat from my cherokee. added a o2 sensor simulator so the computer thinks there is a cat. and run a 4" round magnaflow where the cat used to be, then a 50s flowmaster, all 2.5". its louder than stock, but isnt excessive, and best of all there is none of the dreaded drone that suv's always get.
the magnaflow is straight threw, but is perforateed like a glass pack, so no restriction, but takes a little tone out of it.

40 series is one of their loudest mufflers.

And you CAN go pretty quiet without hurting performance.

Go 70 series if you want quiet. I would never consider a 50 series quiet....only in relation to the 40.

thats what i have been getting at. only i overrthink, and overwrite:doah:

I loved the sound of a 50 series flowmaster, had them on a 88 k1500 with full length headers and 2.5 true duals which sounded awesome. Im not much on straight pipe exhaust but I do like to hear my exhaust and yes I like the sound of glass packs if done right( which means running exhaust pipe bigger than 2"). I am running headers and glass packs on my trail rig and I love the way it sounds but maybe Im still a youngster and I hope I never grow old.
Sorry for the hi-jack of sorts.

Like some have said you need to loss the slowmaster and buy a better muffler. I would suggest running a single 3in exhaust out the driver side with Hooker Aero Chamber muffler, the aero chamber has very nice tone while cruising but lets ya hear it when ya push on the skinny pedal.

Wow, I never realized how much space noise is taking up. By this theory, a quieter muffler and turning down the stereo would offer you more cargo space. :waytogo:

First I would find a new muffler shop lol. It looks like they didnt even clean the old pipe before they welded the new muffler on. Secondly just get a nice big resonator. It'll tone it down and fit just about anywhere a standard pipe is.

What about a resonator exhaust tip??? We put one on my Brother-in-laws Cummings after he straight piped it, the neighbors and my sister couldn't stand it at 4:30 in the morning when he was warming it up before he headed off to work.

I'm pretty sure he got it at the local Autozone. It dropped the tone down a few notches and really helped with the overall loudness. It was only $20-30. May be worth a try before you spend another $100+ on a muffler.
