My Front Dana 70 Build

does the 70 come in anything besides an f 550? Or whatever it comes in? Is there an advantage to a 70 over a 60. I can get a 60 for 600 but it needs lots of work. From reading this trainwreck I aint sure. So I'm asking what does the 70 get you over the 60?

Would a D70HD carrier work in my from Dana 70?

No, and if you're getting an ARB for it, you don't need one anyways.

So I would need a regular D70 carrier then?

Yes. I've forgotten what's different between the "normal" versions of the 70 and the HD's, but if your housing isn't an HD, it won't work with the HD carriers, bearings, etc.

Even my big Snap-on clicker, only goes to 300ft-lbs. Your gonna have to borrow one of those big monsters from a diesel mechanic...3/4 inch drive, 48 inch cheater handle, basically where the big girls play!

Kingpin torque-down question:

Is there a torue wrench that measures 500-600FT/LBS of torque  ??!!

I read a kingpin rebuild thread and apparently the new kingpin has to be torqued down that much :eek1: !!
We fudged a little and used a 200lbs guy on the end of a 3ft cheater bar. 3ft*200lbs=600ft-lbs

When it wouldn't move anymore. He's been daily driving the truck for almost 3yrs not with any trouble, so we must have done something right.

If you wanted to be more techincal you could make an extension for a regular torque wrench. For example I have a 1/2" drive torque wrench with a maximum torque of 150ft-lbs. You could make a bar that has a 1/2" drive socket welded on one end. Slip the other end over a ratched or in this case probably a 7/8" allen wrench. If the bar is 4' long you would be getting 600ft-lbs of torque on the king pin by applying 200ft-lbs of torque with your torque wrench.

This is a pic I made illustrating the same idea to get 250ft-lbs on a D60 pinion nut:

I have a TQR 600 3/4" torque wrench that I have used on the 60 king pins that I have replaced. I had the torque wrench for a specific job at work so I used it.
