So i used to have a 83 k5 but I sold it when I moved from detroit to miami. 10'years later I saw a 70 k5 at a local restaunt and i wanted one. Spent a few weeks back and forth thinking about what I would do with a 40 year old truck sitting in my driveway or taking up my small garage. In the end neither common sense nor my wonderful wife talked me out or it. I bid on a few on ebay but nothing panned out and the good ones sold for 18000 or better, just coundnt buy a tuck for that much that was probaly mostly bondo and rust under new paint. Then on day surfing on ck5 I found a member selling a 1972 k5 that he had allready dumped cubic dollars into at what I thought was a fair price. I sent him a check and had the truck shipped to miami. I took it into the shop at work and we all looked it over. My buddy offered to buy it off me for half what I paid so he could save me 15k, he's wrong he could probaly save me 25, I have a bad habit of throwing lots of money into things and then selling at a loss. I don't expect this to be different. The plan changes every 20 minutes or so but I expect it will end up different then most builds here. It's never going to see mud or dirt or trails, and the height may be an issue. I also have pretty high expectations of the finished product based on what i work on all day at work.
Here's some before photos of how it came off the truck. The truck will be gutted next then dropped off at the body shop where all the rust will be cut out and repaired and then the whole truck sprayed in a cool new color.

I don't see any pics, but I'm looking forward to seeing them!

As for the name of the thread...... my kid and his buddies called it

'Truck Norris'...

since I knew you were taking it to a body shop right away we were going to paint "I am, TRUCK NORRIS!" across the whole tailgate before the shipper came:haha: but they beat us:rolleyes: I even have the airbrush paint I bought for it still on the table:haha:

My kid had a moment where he realized what he'd done and took it rough for a while... :frown1: but we both knew that would happen. I hope it has a good florida life.

And if you ever do hit that point and decide to pick up a different project... PM me first:waytogo: and we'll see if our situation has changed any by then. He's taking to working life WAY better than school... impressing me really:woot: I'm sure he'd do everything in his power if it came available in the future:thumb:

So a few weeks ago I took the k5 out for a joy ride with the wife, her first ride in it and the heater core blew up about 100 feet from the driveway filling the truck with steam.
She's a trouper we went around the neighborhood before we parked it. Then we pulled the top off and took it to a drive in movie, that went better. I've had some home projects ahead of the k5 but now they are done and now it's time to get to work. Started peeling back paint to get to the rust and as it always turns out there's a lot more then expected. Holes though the floor in a few places, both doors, tailgate, rockerboxes, core support. The wiring is toast, the cluster needs a rebuild the ac box smells like hay and cat pee. But the good stuff. the engine runs great, the frame ls mint. Brakes are great..
But the truck drives and rides like a farm tractor.
I've had some deep dilemmas about what to do with the truck at this point. My options were
1 sell it as and buy a complete one
2 do a budget resto and toss it on ebay
3 do the resto I want
4 do something wild and financially stupid

Right now I'm leaning with number 4.
The body is going to come off the frame this week and get media blasted and then I can start on the rust work. After that I might have to start a new thread or rename this one.

Dude, it's a 1st Gen.... they all end up "Option 4" eventually.

....unless Option 3 happens to be a full-on restoration, in which case it's basically Option 4 anyway.

Did you ever date a supermodel or a stripper? Your relationship with this truck is probably going to feel very similar....

Tried to put up pictures of the rust. But the site only let's me do one photo per post, no time for that.

resize the pics or change the size your camera takes, then try again...:waytogo: site wont take multiple big pics.. I hope it isn't non fixable...:dunno: I guess there was unseen stuff, always is:doah:...

option 4 is where it would have ended up eventually here too:rolleyes: but for purely fun reasons:D

It's not as bad as what a lot of guys start with put every panel on the truck needs patched and repaired. Hope the photos work this time.

Photos worked. Truck was dropped off at a body shop yesterday to have it all fixed, I don't have the time for that much body work I want to get going with the next step.
