I did the remote starter relay mod on my truck, cleaned up alot of unnecessary ratnest while I was at it. I was wiping the block clean to put the starter back on when a piece of the outer corner came off in my hand:doah:

Guess now I know why my starter was grinding every few times I cranked it

YUCK! :doah:

What's your next move look like? :dunno:

I've had a line on a crate 350 in an old bus, guess I'm moving that to the front of the list now. Hoping I can get another start or 2 out of it to get the big b*tch up there and get the transplant :dunno:

I'll get pics today. It wasn't a huge chunk just little corner, the bolt still threaded and locked but I'm not sure if the starter will kick sideways when I crank it

PS: QUESTION: Do 'ram horn/air horn' exhaust manifolds dump out close enough to 'standard' to bolt up my duals or do they hit the frame/mounts in a suburban?

The stock log style manifolds used in the late 70's SBC have the exact same exit location as the 6.2L. Made the diesel conversion on my '79 easy since I was able to reuse the exhaust.

If you use the little "brace" off the front of the starter motor case ,that is often missing, you may get away with it for a long time, seeing the bolt will still tighten up OK...

There was a certain starter GM used for a few years in the early 70's on a few vehicles that had 3 bolts that bolted "up" instead of the usual 2 bolts..I sold a few to guys who had the block strip out or break off on the outermost bolt hole, and it worked well enough for them to get by,using the other 2 bolt holes and the front brace..

As for the ram horn exhaust manifolds,I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure if you try using them on a 73-87 square body, the ones with the straight dump outlets, not the angled ones, the outlets end up dumping directly over where the motor mounts sit on the crossmember...someone else might be able to verify this for sure..

I'm assuming this is for '83+ 6.2L engines with the exhaust coming out the end of the manifold (vs. my weird '82 manifold with the down pipe coming out near the center of the driver-side manifold)

Are you guys saying that the manifolds from a sbc (of any era) can fit on a 6.2 engine? That would be news to me (though I've never tried it).

Diesel that was my first thought when I did it but I haven't been able to locate a 3 bolt starter so far. And for some reason the 73 Blazer motor I have has no place to bolt that bracket. Not that I have the d*mn thing anymore anyway.

Thanks Kenny. I'll find out how they drop this morning when I go listen to the bus motor run. Not getting into alot of exhaust headaches,my old manifolds will be fine if the horns don't work.

:woot:It fired RIGHT UP :waytogo: No taps, ticks, knocks, rattles, squeals NUTHIN!!! Smooth idle, no smoke,no lope.
It's a Goodwrench 350 with low miles. Owner said it pulled that Chevy 6000 series bus around great.

The air horns dump straight down in the center so I'll be using my old stocks.

Hopefully this time next week I'll be rippin' and tearin' around like a teenager.

The guys swapping motors for me have a shopping list of parts for later too. Subbie rear doors, whole quarters, some nice sheets of 14 gauge metal.....hmmmmm

6.2 diesel manifolds are exclusive,I don't think any gas engine manifold will bolt up to a 6.2 head...but if your putting a 6.2 in place of a gas V8 ,the gas manifolds will end up in the same spot as the diesel's,so your old exhaust pipes should still bolt right up...far as I know the 3 bolt pattern on the flanges are the same on both..

I wish I could remember what number starter I sold those guys years ago--if I remember correctly it had a cast iron nose, not aluminum, and it wasn't used on too many vehicles..I think it fit only engines with the larger 168 tooth flywheel..
As for the engine block not having a tapped hole for the front brace,it should still have the "boss" casted into the block, that can be drilled and tapped for a bolt..
I know a guy who welded a 6.2 block that had a big chunk busted out where the outermost starter bolt went, and it was a success..he used nickel rod with a DC arc welder...but he's a certified welder too,and can weld a lot of "impossible" things and has good luck too..

I had a "free" 350 given to me that had the block snapped at that starter bolt location years ago--a junkyard had it,when they pulled the engine from the vehicle,it swung on the chain wrapped around the loader's forks, and it crashed to the concrete floor..they just heaved it in the scrap pile!...
I had a truck with a SM465 and a cast iron bell housing, that had a starter with 3 bolts that bolted to the bellhousing, not the engine,so I was able to make use of it...that engine ran nice too!..but was only "good" for that one particular application..

Now that I recall we used a Y pipe and manifolds from the donor when we pulled the 6.2 for the 350 swap.
Diesel if you do remember let me know I'd like to have that 3 bolt nosecone just for the extra strength.
I'll look at the 350 I'm buying to see if it has that bolt hole for the brace, it may since it's in a bus with an Allison trans behind it.

Man I got so happy when I heard the motor run I didn't take any pics. Nothing special just a Goodwrench 350 but man did it sound smoooooooth. Maybe later this year a Comp Xtreme will make it a little lumpy:rolleyes:

The smart*ss just hadda tease me though...pulled a tarp back off a 454 Vortec and just grinned. That's OK...if I got that big block my wife would claim it for herself.

Well I got brave and cranked it over. And cranked. And charged the battery. And cranked. It's turning over like it's heat soaked. Apparently the solenoid I bought is either too low on ampage or my luck holds true and I got a dud. It hasn't kicked sideways...yet...

The reason I cranked it was to get the beast down to the shop where it's getting the Goodwrench transplant. Well between my schedule, the mechanics schedule and the weather it got pushed off til tomorrow. Which coincides with the "No Parking 3/30" sign on the barrel the concrete guy sat all up on my sh*t. Fun Fun F*cking Fun

My Luck Doesn't Change.....or has it......

Out with the Old in with the...uh....Less Old:waytogo:

Drove the beast down to drydock this morning. Besides the motor I think I hit paydirt. 2 rear doors, 1 passenger door, fenders, a full Suburban quarter, a step bumper I can fab on.....I'm gonna be spending all my allowance down there this spring :D

My friend keeps trying to talk me into the 454 he has but I already bought the 350 wwwAAAAhhhhhhh

Here's my 73 block after its last ride. The bus is the donor with the low mileage Goodwrench. The door might be going on soon. May be downgrading to manual windows but that beats rust and nonfunctional power windows.

:D The Beast LIVES AGAIN :waytogo:

Got the 'nuthin' special' Goodwrench #638 block 350 in my 'Burb, slapped the tired 600 Holley and Performer RPM on top, fanagled the serpentine on proceeded to drop the dizzy 180* out.......then we got our sh*t together and FIRED IT UP

It's so nice to have a smooth running powerplant again. A little tweak-n-tune cruisin' on a nice spring day and it'll be perfect.
So now I'm rockin an under 10K mile 350 and 700r4 in my 85.

You guys with your weekend toys and disposable allowances can't know what it means to a broke*ss construction grunt when his Daily Driver/Place Of Employment gets another breath of life.

Now maybe I'll get my Rolling Renovation complete this year.

Trust me we all have been there. Way too many times.

sweet you is rocking and rolling again

Finally got back to road testing the Suburban yesterday. Readjusted the TV cable after better linkage. Now I've got the dreaded blown front seal or so it seems. When we swapped motors it the TC and front of trans were dry as a bone. Trans never slipped, ran beautifully until this.

Sounds like you damaged the seal during the swap. Did you take the torque converter off and put it back on?
