Last week someone hit my truck while I was driving. I was doing 30 or so and someone decides to pull out of their parking meter space and hits my door and 1/4 pannel. The guy told me he got into the same accident two weeks before. :haha: I took it to a shop that I know of to tack on a few extra dollars to get a new paint job. (Don't tell anyone... shhhhhhhhh!) and when they looked at it they said it needed a new body. The floor is so rotted that there is no way they can weld new rockers onto this truck. I need to replace the body from the dash back to the tailgate. I think this is pushing it, but I was really surprized how much damage a Nissan Maxima could do to the side of an 18 year old Chevy.

Do you guys think I should believe this or is this shop just out for the cash? They know me and know that I will never get rid of this truck, which is why I think they mentioned that 2/3 of the truck needs to go. I have asked other shops, but didn't get any reply yet. It's not my dollar so I don't care about the cost, but it sounds like a job that could cost a lot more than this guy will give up for the repair. I need to find a doner Blazer with good floors and a good right side, ship that here, take that part, paint that to match.... :doah:

Oh and the Mopar is Most Original Parts Already Replaced. My truck will become a Mopar now.

Any thoughts on this?

First it's stolen this year and now this... what a beating for the both of us. :eek1:

I would go to several shops, a dealer with a body shop is preferred $$$$$. Keep shopping till you find some shops that will give you a bid on repairing the rusted areas and the damage.

I would imagine the insurance company would say they would pay for the actual damage caused during the crash, or just total it and give you the depreciated value of an 18 year old truck, :(

Good Luck.

x2.

Take it to a *GM dealer* with an auto body shop, if you can find one anymore. The price they quote will likely be twice as high as anyone else for the same work, then you take the insurance $$ off that quote, and apply at a different shop.

Or, have a body shipped to you from someplace like AZ, as it would likely be cheaper.

Looks like all I'm going to get is around $2,100 since it's valued at $3,100 with a $1,000 decutable... I doubt I can fix it for that. :( I'll find a way, I always find a way.

for 2100 you can buy a nice k5 in az.. save up or come up with the rest to get it shipped

So it sounds like you just need a different blazer tub. They arent that uncommon to find in junk yards. Or just buy a less rusty blazer, we found one in socal for 1000, and swap all your good stuff into it.

were not that far, hitch a ride down with someone on their way back from moab.. find the cleanest one you can and try to drive it home

You claiming it on your insurance or the other guys? If it is the other guy's insurance, why would there be a deductible for you? If it is the other guy's insurance, then you have to worry about it exceeding the value of your vehicle and them just giving you the $3100. As was suggested, I would go to several shops and see what they say. For these older vehicles, sometimes they suck at sourcing replacement parts so don't let them charge you $300 for a $90 replacement part. What I mean by that is keep them honest to some extent.

Here is a good place for replacement body parts but they nail you on the shipping. Dunno, might be able to work out a bulk shipment order with them or something but they have every panel that you could need. I have heard from others that the quality of the steel isn't as good as the original steel though.

Also, metro sent me this link and they have a lot of cool Blazer body parts. Their website sucks to navigate, but might we worth calling or investing the time in:

If you need more sources, let me know. I have quite a few marked in my favorites when I was researching body repairs for my rusted out 75.

That may be an option, but it would be just as easy to have one of you find one, let me know where, then haul a trailer down behind my K5 and haul it back. I already know what it takes to get a VIN in the state when you combine, and I want to keep my 80 front clip. But, it would be much easier than trying to repair all the rust on mine. Plus I could do all the wiring before I swap it on.

Have you tried looking on craigslist.com? You can search state by state. That was suggested to me when I was basically told I would be better off with a donor vehicle and I found one for $500 here in state. If you are willing to drive, I am sure you could find a good body out there.

Yeah, but I haven't quite got to that point yet. Got new axles to pick up this month and a lift, then some wiring needs to be done on mine. Then I will probably start looking the first of next year, and will just pick one up in Az and take my time getting it set up. Mine doesn't have quite as much rust as yours did.:wink1:

Don't hate me because mine was krusty and rusty!!!! :haha:

I am kind of jealous of you right now. I mean you are going to get a chunk of change to do things the right way whereas I just have no change lol

Don't be jealous, it has taken me years of hard work to get to the point in my life where I can actually consider doing something like this. It doesn't happen overnight, and is rarely handed to you on a silver platter. It takes hard work and determination to reach a point like this, and even then you still have to be prepared for failure. Buying the tub will involve saving money after I pay for Christmas, then finding what I want, and not buying the first gen I have been eyeing.:wink1:

Take your time, and you will find the change comes slowly.

As others have suggested, it would probably be best to use the other guys insurance to pay you to have the work done, then just pick up a complete tub. Body repairs and panels are expensive, especially for our older vehicles. The rust you describe sounds a little worse than mine, but I know that repair panels alone for mine would run me nearly 4k, and that's not counting my time and money to cut, weld, and paint.

Get several quotes, especially from shops that are going to charge more, then when they total your truck, take the money, buy back your truck and find a good tub.

Well that was boner kill...........:haha:

Seriously though, I know what you are saying and it is true. I am glad you have the chance to get this done the right way and wish I could be so lucky. I used to drive a 66 Ford F-100 that used to be my Grandpa's truck. Some dumbass ran into me when I was a sophmore or junior in high school. My dad finally fully restored the truck but it took about 8 years or more of working on it here and there and on the weekends. Projects like these are out of pride, joy, love, dedication, etc not short term economics. Plus you can think of it this way; you are saving yet another one (or parts of it) from the Crusher!

Those are the reasons that I am building my Blazer. Being from a Ford family, I hear all about how I should buy a Ford, but there is nothing like a Blazer.

Now if I can just get enough done on Dad's 41 Chev flatbed to get him to finally get it restored. Maybe I will see if I can rent a garage and move it and my Blazer in for serious work.:wink1:

[end hijack]

You too?!?!? I used to own a few old Broncos (66, 69 and 75). Had friends that ran Blazers and always liked them so jumped on the chance to get one for $500. Little did I know what I was getting myself into...... :haha:

I've been thinking about renting a garage too. Won't be long until the cold sticks around and I want to get this thing painted by spring. Glad I found another one with less rust and more "comforts" for another $500. What is helping me with the first purchase is knowing that I have spares for the trans, transfer case, axles and engine lol. When you do yours, you planning to do a build thread on it? I'd be interested to see it.
