My new M1008 CUCV

I apologize in advance for hijacking, but I was wondering are you able to swap the front clip for the round headlight 73-78 front clip has anyone done this?

yes you can, but it's not just swapping fenders. Fenders, hood, cowl cover, rad support, and of course everything on the front end. Doable, but most guys go the other way, newer sheetmetal on an older truck

Yes it does, cab and doors remained the same 73-91.

its not intentional as far as I know, if it was an army truck, our mechanics just suck:-)

Does the military supply them with all the tools they need? Specifically a timing set-up. My truck only had 28K miles when I got it. It was hard to imagine that someone would have replaced the injector pump already. That was why I wondered if they detuned them. Maybe it was off right out of the factory or maybe the truck was for some guy the mechanic did not like. Who knows. When timing, it did seem like the louder it got, the better it ran.

Well, Big Ugly definitely clatters and clanks.

My guess is that for some reason they went in there and worked on the motor. Part failure, required maintenance (most were supposed to get new IP's in the 90's to use Jet fuel instead of just diesel), someone did something stupid, etc. After that someone probably slapped the engine together and it ran so they called it good. In fact it might be why it was taken out of service. They might have known it wasn't running correctly but decided to just get rid of it then spend the money and time to make it run correctly. Mine was surplused after some dogface private seized the rear brakes by driving around with the parking brake engaged. The truck was worth less to them than the cost of one of those 14FF's they have in crates and the work necessary for the swap.

Yep, out and free!

The round metal plate with interchangeable numbers on it is called a bridge plate. The numbers on the plate define the weight class of the vehicle.

Sounds like a good theory. They obviously had more than enough of these and could afford to surplus a few. I have yet to see one with more than 100K. Most of their mechanics were probably in the 18-25 years old range which does not add up to a lot of experience in the garage. If a truck gave them too much trouble they could send it.

How do you like the warmer climate?

SOOOOO MUCH BETTER. It's been 70 more than it has been 50 during the last week. Even when it rained the other day it was a warm rain. The locals keep telling me about how nasty it gets in the winter and it just makes me giggle.

Eh, if they have a good maintenance program and they follow the military service manuals then the maintenance is good. The tire place I always used back in Traverse City had a guy there that had been a MT mech in the Army and he could quote you chapter and verse on the CUCV's and he'd been out since the early 90's. I'd wager there were more guys like him working on them than guys who half ass'd stuff.
Now-a-days it's just more that the government goes "it's worth x to us but it'd cost y to fix" and if y is bigger than x they get rid of it.

Does this mean that you can actually lift "Big Ugly" since it fitting in the garage is no longer a factor?

It must be tough with that warmer weather :wink1:. No more scraping the frost off the windshield in the mornings... No more paying ridiculous prices for heating oil... No more snow removal... No more rust (comparitively speaking)... No more shoveling roofs... Ok, why do people live up here again? Good luck with the new digs. :waytogo:

No, Big Ugly will still occupy the prime place in the garage. I spent a lot of time measuring rental house garages last week to ensure Big Ugly would fit. Gotta be able to at least work on it out of the weather.
That said Big Ugly may never get lifted...I kinda like the height it is now for general usability...but it might happen just so I can do a few other things like crossover. That's a lot of money and a pole barn or REALLY tall garage away from now.

Kentucky still has winter but it's more of a rainy, cool time than a snowy time. The last couple winters have had snow but rarely was it more than a slight coating at a time. The stuff we wouldn't even think twice about or even bothering to shovel off the sidewalk.
At any rate it's light years better than our crappy weather. Last one out please turn out the lights!

Could you by chance measure the inside of your bed for me? Flat surface to flat surface width wise. Decided to build me a gas tank with my downtime over here:D

I can't but I'm betting someone on here can. Big Ugly is in Michigan and I'm in Kentucky.
