Ive started to redo my unfinished mud truck back into a secondary truck/ tow rig and possibly my plow truck.'

Its an 84 with a 350 465 205

I already put in a 14bff and swapped over the 10 bolt to 8 lug and some 4.56s a couple years ago. Ran with 38s a few times and there it sat.

Now Im goin through doing body work, cab mounts and so on.

Here are some before pics

Mine next to my brothers

Fixing the rust holes on the doors.

This section of the frame was bad so I had to cut it out

Used a pc of angle iron to replace it.

Back to the door patches

Had to make a small patch for inside the door as well

I will put up more pics of the progress a little later tonight

I used tiger hair on all the patch pcs then bondo. The doors were full of bondo already.

This is the pass. door with the final coat of bondo. This was my first attempt at any type of body work.

Here is the new color, Im waiting on new front fenders.

I had to get the e brakes working to pass inspection. The 14b is from the 70s and the truck is an 84 so the cables were all diff. The 14b had the bolt in style cable and the truck runs the push in style.

Heres a pic of the orginal bolt in cable on the rearend

The new cable

So to make this setup work I took the pc of the old drum and split it , took a pc of tubing and welded over it

Then welded a washer over the end for the cable to slip and lock into.

Installed on the backing plate

Right now Im in the process of putting in the new body mounts. The two rad supports went in good. One of the ones under the floor boards bolt broke, so I had to drill it out and cut a hole in the floor to put a washer and nut on the new bolt. The other side backed right out. Havent got a chance to do the back to.

All the body mounts are done now. The back of the cab near one of the mounts cracked do to the lower cup rusting away, so I put a pc of angle iron from mount to mount.

I dont have a pic of the angle installed but it kinda tucks up behind the back layer of sheet metal of the cab.

Next Im gonna start drilling out the rivets to the rear spring hanger and replace with bolts till I get a shackle flip kit.

looking good it looks allot like my k5 its nice and rusty just keep at it and you will get there. good luck and keep the progress coming

the bed looks like its in pretty good shape

It is, what rust is on it is from where the po had some stupid wide fender flare type things on it. The lip around the wheel arch is gonna need work, not sure how Im gonna go about fixing that just yet. Not really enought rust to go and buy a patch panel, its just in kinda a tough spot.
All of the ribs on the bottom are in perftect shape.

I like what you did with your E brake cables, I put a 14 Bolt FF from a 76 under my 85 Chev but hadn't gotten around to doing something about the cables.

Thanks. It was the easiest way I could think of to do it.
One thing I didnt mention was that I had to put a spacer against the return spring thats on the cable inside the drum so it was tight enough to release.

You can see it in this pic. I used a pc of copper tubing that was big enough to slip over the knob at the end of the cable but smaller than the spring. You can kinda see where I tapped the end of the tubing to make sure the spring didnt slip over it.

If you do decide to put a plow on the truck you shouldn't have a hard time finding one.

There is often Fisher Speedcast plows listed on craigslist maine for around $500. I saw recently an 8' Fisher for a 73-87 GM selling for $450.

Ive got everything for the plow setup except an extra blade. If I do use for plowin, I will be using my 9' blade off of my 97 1 ton p/u.

I did the e brake fix: I went to the junk yard and got new backing plates for a few bucks and swapped em out. If you are lucky, you can find a set with brakes that are in better condition than yours and fix two problems at once.

Unfortunatly the junkyards around here usually dont keep anything 15 years or older, they send them right to the crusher. There used to be one pick and pull type yard about and hour and a half from here but I dont think they do that anymore.
Also around here they know what they have and want an arm and a leg for stuff. They also want to sell you the entire axle instaed of just the backing plates. Kinda sucks

That sucks. Need to get a trailer and come down to Texas for a week or two and stock up on hard parts.

You dont know how bad I would like to do that. A good buddy of mine moved out to New Mexico last year, so the though has crossed my mind. Maybe if I ever get a boat load of extra cash someday.
