My "Official" Stepside Restoration Thread and LS Swap 2021

Got my new bump stops in the mail today as I was walking out the door. They are from the rear of a '90s Tahoe. They are progressive and are hollow in the center. They should fit well in the front. I'll have to flex it out and do some measuring as far as if or how much they need to be spaced down.

Don't mind the suggestive color or ribs...

Haha I hear ya. My job has no holidays so its frustrating when everyone else does. :screwy:

No real serious update, just finally got my fuel lines rapped up all nice and tidy after replacing my return line, got the heater core figured out why it would only blow luke warm, and got my inner fenders back in. But most of all got to drive the thing up and down the block a couple times! First time driving it since probably Novermber. The only thing was that I had to avoid streets where the snow banks are melting into the roads to prevent it from getting salted. So basically I did a small dry stretch of my road back and forth about 3 times... :doah:

Okay so I remember reading in a thread a while back about the newer heater cores not quite sitting right in the housing causing the air to blow around the core rather than through it. I replaced the heater core with the style that supposedly does that when I put the cab back together. So basically the solution is to stick some adhesive back insulation around it. Observe:

Adhesive back foam that I had laying around:

During my test drive, I had the heat that I used to have with the original core. I had to open the window, though it was 45 today so it felt warmer anyway. But nonetheless, it was blowing hot just like its supposed to.

I also got the inner fenders back in after having them out for the Ford shock towers.

The driver's side fits without mods:

The passenger's side fits but I'd like to clean up that cut and give it a little more clearance on the back side:

Looks good! Thanks for the heads up on the heater core. I know I'm going to have to do the one in the burb before too long. I think it might be original! Anyway, so how do you like the bilstiens? Do you think they were worth the money for mostly Street use? Or would you maybe go with something different if you had to do it over?

Also, do you have crossover steering yet? I think you don't. Last I remember it seems you weren't entirely happy with how it drives. It's so weird cause most everything in the front one of the burb is new, and it doesn't drive as good as the 78 which I have basically never done anything to...

No crossover, still factory push pull steering. But honestly I love the way it handles. It rides very well with the Bilsteins and no sway bar. It actually handles and rides better than it ever has. I'd say the Bilsteins are worth the money. My only regret is that I didn't get something even better. I'm a firm believer now that Bilstein 5100s are a minimum for any shock.

Interesting. Thats what im hoping for out of the 78. I mean bilstiens and no sway bar. Thanks for the feedback.

Just out of curiosity, what brand heater core are you fellas using? Where did you get it from? Or are they all the same now? I blocked mine off about 8 years ago because it was leaking on the floor board, but every now and then my feet get a little cold. :surepal:

I just used a generic Vatozone unit on my CUCV and I had also sealed it up with some foam tape and it works perfectly in 15* weather. That's the coldest I've bothered trying to start the diesel.

Thanks guys. I'm wondering if there's a difference between the ones they sell at LMC and the ones from the parts stores. They probably come from the same manufacturer. I guess I'll go down and see those vatos at the Zone before next winter.

Granted it's been nearly 6 years but I bought one for my '89 at...I think Advance?...and it worked just fine yet was much cheaper than the other stores' cores.

I can't believe those are only $12 a piece. How long are they? (That sounds pretty bad considering their appearance.) Do they come in any other color? :tongue1:
