My "Official" Stepside Restoration Thread and LS Swap 2021

looks great glenn, are you going to do something about the column shift indicator hole in the bezel? if you don't mind me asking, what did it cost ya to do the wiring and gauge upgrade?

You know I'm not sure haven't thought of it yet. Maybe spray some black paint back there :dunno:

As far as cost:
$180 EzWiring Harness
$140 EzWiring Gauge mounting
$250ish Autometer gauges
$34 Lokar speedo cable
$75+ for all connectors, heat shrink, conduits, and other misc items
$89 Summit 100amp Alternator

Total: $768ish
Considering that a Painless harness is $550 or more, and then you still have to buy all that on top of the hefty price tag, EzWiring easily saved me mad coin yo.
Well worth the $$. Plus peace of mind that every wire jumped by a few gauge sizes and not to mention is NEW. Plus I like how my radio doesn't cut in and out any more everytime I go over bumps. Also now I can run my aux lights without over drawing my charging system.

Update:
FINISHED!
Woot! So good to be driving my truck again. Only thing is that pesky TO bearing that needs attention. Well actually almost finished I still need to connect up the cig lighter and the dome light.

when you bought the EZ wiring harness, it didn't come with the connectors/ends already attached? i guess $770 ain't too bad to rewire the whole truck

It did come with a little bag of butt splice connectors and those round connectors, but they they didn't have nearly enough to do the entire truck.
The only thing it comes with pre-connected is the column harness.

If i kept the stock gauges and my alternator then I could have cut out a good chunk as well as if you just want to run stock headlight setup rather than through the relays like I did.

oh ok. for some reason im thinking of newer vehicles that have the plug and play connectors. whats the difference between your alternator and the new summit 100 amp alternator you picked up.. just different outputs and connectors?

that deffinately sounds like a good upgrade for my 77. im still running the glass fuses, so i think when i get rid of my 305 H.O. im going to do the wiring as well.

Get rid of the 305? Who would want to get rid of that rocketship?

haha i'll sell it to you. it runs, but not good enough to drive more than around the block. i wouldn't trust it to take it on the highway the way it runs right now. i don't want to dump any amount of money into the 305, id rather use that money to build a 355 or a 383 stroker. whats the difference between a 305, a 350, and a 400 small block?

lots lol

305 and 350 have same stroke but different bores but the same basic block

400 has a different stroke and bore and the bores are siamesed

my good old 305HO that burns about 2 quarts of oil ever oil change sure as hell still can move my truck as well as still spin the tires. Sure as hell moves way faster than my 2.2L S10... :D

btw stay tuned there might be an S10 V8 swap build in the future... ;)

a siamese bore block is one where there is no space between cyls for water to circulate
is the most basic way I can put it

IMO i'd rather have the 400 with 350 heads but it's just a preference thing. What i have now and what i want later are alot different :D

no differance in the heads other than the "steam" ports in the 400 heads (which are easy to add to other small block heads)

I like 400 block with 350 crank and 6.0 inch rods and a good set of heads and a decent cam

thank you for schooling me YellowK20. has there been anything done to your 305 H.O. glenn? mine couldn't get out of its own way to save its life let alone spin tire!

I've done headers, dual exhaust, Weiand Intake manifold, Holley 4160 600cfm, and pertronix flame thrower ignition. Also being tuned correctly is a huge difference as well as the correct gearing. When I switched from 3.08s to 4.10s its like it got 100hp more. Also a barebones stepside like mine is pretty light especially over the rearend. I've always wondered how it would perform if I put some small tires on it.

I like 305's there not as bad as everyone makes them out to be Someday when I'm bored and have a little cash to spend I'd like to Build a 305 with a 400 crank .

So whats next on this project???

yeah you do have a point about your truck being light, i just can't understand because my 305 H.O. has an edelbrock 650 carb, edelbrock intake, accel hei distributor w/ an hei super coil, accel plug wires, bosch platinum plugs, and im going to put headers on mine. ive been told mine needs a cam or a timing chain and the po said the motor has low compression
