My roof rack *Finally installed*

That looks sweet! I really like the tapered mounts, so that tree branches don't get caught under the rack. Do you have any shots from different angles? Any drawings?

Got my rack installed finally....kind of crappy lighting pics but here they are. Will get some better pics in better light this week.

Yeah I can imagine. Lights aren't wired up yet, prolly work on that after work this week and this weekend. But all 8 lights are 100watt H3 bulbs.

Very, very nice!! if it weren't for shipping issues, you could sell those racks as quick as you can make them... your burb is looking meaner and meaner everytime I see pics of it..

WOW, serious event lighting. You must have some serious battery and alternator power going on there too(?).:D

The lights I put on mine are the cheap ones from HF. It hurts less when a tree rips one off.

To answer the Q aboot mounting, what I did was use a hinge at each of the 6 legs on my roof rack. The top of the roof is single thickness, but once below that crease above the rain gutters there is a big chunk of structure aboot 1/8" below the roof skin. I used #12 SS sheetmetal screws (3 per hinge) to attach each to the structure under the skin.
I converted the hinges to use 5/16 SS bolts & Nylox. That way pulling 6 bolts let me take the rack off should I ever need to.
I'm undecided aboot whether to put the rack on my '91

I wanted a flat rack for a lower wind profile and so that I could slide a 4x8 sheet up there w/o having to climb up there. For the '03 LocosMocos Baja 1000 trip I hauled all of the table tops (all 4x8's) on the rack. Built a pair of bars that are the width of the rack from 1.125 square tube and bought 4 HF C Clamps to clamp the bars across the top of the 4x8's. When I built my weld table I brought the 2" x 1/4" square tube home by using the C-Clamps to hold the 20 footers to the rack.

BTW, This is my '79 & the rust was there b4 the screw holes. Working against me is the left ocean is about 1/2 mile away due west.

Oh yea, the tabs sticking out fwd from the front tube are "Bike-tite" type bike holders. There is also a threaded boss off the rear on the driver's side for mounting an amber dust light.

the single thickness of the roof will hold up to quite a bit, i had 25 sheat of 1/2 inch dryway, 4 sheats of 3/4 ply and 40 2x4s and a bump long ride home and it only dented down a little, i never made the mounts the PO did, it i did i would line them up with the roof cross suports for better strenght

Unless I missed it somewhere, please post up details with pics of your method of attachment to the roof.
Thanks, Jimbo

You didn't miss it as I didn't mention it.....at least I don't think.

With this body, I just straight bolted some padded feet thru the roof after drilling some holes. Didn't really care with this body as its getting replaced hopefully this winter.

For the other body tho, I am going to make my own by copying con-ferr's mounts.
