My thoughts on 52's, one year later

Now that I'm back in the mood, I need to trade off these 8 inch springs front and rear for a set of 52's and a set of 64's to build into the 1/4 elliptical set up I've been dreamin of!

has any body had a problem with stock 52's tunring into "W's"?

I've seen several cases where the stock clamps, or lack of any clamps has caused leaf distortion. One of the members at AK5 just receintly reconfigured his set up to prevent it, although his main is slightly distorted already. He wasn't able to clamp the main and second because of the custom front mounts he was running. (the end of the springs, close the front eye was blocked by the side supports of the mount) He has since redesigned the front mounts, and has clamped the main and second leaf together (at both ends) which should help.

So far as I have seen, that's the best solution to try to prevent it.

Heres the pics of the mount that I mentioned.

Old mount, that block clamp placement:

I got a stock set of 52s for my truck, the "best seller" they had there. Supposed to have a good ride, still able to carry decent load, and not too expensive. Each spring was rated at 1800 each. Total of 8" overall height. When I loosely put them on my truck, the flattened out right to the overload, and didn't get any real lift out of it. If I had the right brackets in there, might have gotten a little lift, but not enough to warrant the swap. I got a heavier pair, tried them, got some lift, and didn't flatten out as much, but now i have to wait for the friggin brackets. I really wish I had a welder, would have been done by now. I'll post some pics when I get them....

well, ive done the swap already. i just havent driven it yet. ive got about 7" of lift with a zero rate and 7.25" shackles. all i have done to the springs is flip the overload. these springs came out of the rear of this blazer. they so far have held up to X-miles that the truck has on it, and havent had any problems yet. but i also know they were never wheel'd yet. i think i will take my chances, and if i screw these ones up, i will get some different ones.

yeah, UHMW-PE has pretty much NO give in it whatsoever... and while it will be durable because it has a very high impact resistance, it's gonna ride like crap. Not 100% sure why anyone who knew much about the material would make them for you without warning you first. You can make custom polyurathan bushings too... why not go that route?

does anybody make a 52 designed for the front yet, just looking for a good spring to go under my 72 blazer. im using the same adjustable front hangers as above and im wanting to run 42,s with about 6 inches of lift. it will have heavy fender trimming done.
