n00b axle question . . .

Note that while stock 15" wheels will fit on the 14MM studs, the lug nuts destroy the wheels. Either the taper angle is wrong, or the lug nut itself is too large a diameter, either way it ruins the tapered seats in the wheel that the lug nut is supposed to snug up against.

Ok, now I have a noob question of my own, thinking back over my 14bff swap. I have a set of stock 1982 wheels and a set of stock 2004 wheels. I'm running standard 1/2" studs on the front and 1997 metric studs on the back (G3500 van axle). I've not noticed any issues with lug nut compatability. Am I missing something, or do the FF axles not have this lug-nut-destroying-the-wheel problem? :dunno:

Maybe it depends on the studs or lug nuts if there were any variations? I was told my 14SF came from a 1997 tahoe or somesuch, but I never investigated, it's the right width. The 14MM studs are ALMOST as big in diameter as the holes in the older wheels, and the lug nuts do not come to a fine point, so the rounded edge is what hits the rim. It doesn't fit into the wheel hole taper (or not properly), so it is basically just clamping the wheel to the drum.

I didn't have any problems running it this way for a few years either, but when I went to let a buddy use those wheels on his 7/16" stud equipped truck, he wasn't comfortable with how messed up the holes were and decided against running them.

Sorry, but I guess we have to start somewhere.

So I have 10 bolts, front and rear. From what I understand, if I break an axle, I'm not going anywhere, because of the C clips in the pumpkin. Only thing I can do is replace it on the trail, correct?

Are the left and right rear axles the same, can I carry one spare? and the front, I need to carry a whole set of everything, because of the different lengths, and U joints as well?

I'm not afraid to do any wrenching, but I want to make sure I know what to prepare for. Apparently I wouldn't just be able to remove the driveshaft to the offending end of the truck and limp out in 2 wheel drive.

Sorry, I know this is dumb stuff for you guys.

Hey Phil, have you corrected your rear axle issue yet? :pimp:

hahahaha. No, I still have the 14 bolt sitting there. So far it's working well for what I do. I'm not even in a hurry to change the 3:42 ratio really, it runs so good on the freeways, and my granny with low range never has had me wishing for a lower gear yet. But we'll see. I still have all the parts.

Escrow closes September 15. Then all hell breaks loose. Right now we are running ourselves ragged trying to build inventory so we can shut down for a month. I'm pretty much exhausted every night. But they approved my BB days off a long time ago, so there's no stopping that. hahaha.

And sorry guys for being not around much. Work has had me slammed, and I seem to have picked up a girlfriend, so time is not something I have much of. When my world calms down a bit, I'll be back more.

Not worried as long as you're not dead or suffering from GDFO

Where is the weight loss thread? I'm down to 185 now. I've lost 28 pounds so far. Not all of it voluntarily. hahaha.
