even before I clicked this thread open I knew it would be the hickey sidewinder.

Me too. Found one on my buddies K5 and had no idea what it was until I searched around a bit.

I have seen a couple working. Pull just fine. Slow and they are loud but strong.

Cable is small, but they work good. Had my junk pulled out of a jam with one.
Been doing some looking...sounds like lots of guy like them, some guys don't. Seen Larry had one on his Blue shortbox at one time.

are the solenoids there?
Everything is there, no controller though, it is wired to a toggle switch on the dash. A couple of wires are detached from the solenoids, and the winch handle is seized up.
I wont get to it for a while probably, the truck it came on was given to us last weekend and I just don't have much time for it right now.
Look through Larry's posts on the sidewinder. He's got good info on it. It probably needs a solid cleaning and lube job, maybe a solenoid or two but it should work.

That's a H.E. Sidewinder alright. My dad worked with Hickey and built rollbars, push bars, skid plates, etc. He even had a Sidewinder on his '70 Blazer. He sold the truck 20 years ago, but still has the winch!! He's looking to part ways with it now...
