need a foldable engine hoist (cherry picker)

That looks similar to the one I bought from Advance Auto. They price matched Harbor Freight at $219.99 down from their advertised $249.99. I've not had a chance to use it yet, but it seems like an ok rig. You can find the ones at Harbor Freight on sale for like $179.99 sometimes though.

Keep an eye out on Craigslist. I bought a colapsable engine hoist and big block engine stand for 100 bucks. Used only once. Both were like new when I bought them. Drove 100+ miles to buy then picker and stand for so cheap, then to buy a 454, then home.

been watching CL for a bit now, nothing is coming up reasonably close (that I've noticed) and also wondered about the quality...seems this Eastwood unit has very good reviews, and the Big Red (Torin) I've used of my neighbors is a stout unit as well...are the HF units cheap crap or a decent piece...I can see it getting a decent amount of use in the future...454/6BT swap, cab removal, box removal, etc.

ive used the crap out of my buddies HF one.. same thing. If you look at one closely then go to another place and look at another brand they are pretty much identical... a lot of the parts could even have come from the same supplier they're that close.

Im familiar with the Torin, I'll check the local China Freight store..thanks Rick

I have a Horbor Freight version that has fold up leggs and the boom points straight down. Takes up very little room compared to most. 10 years and no issues. And I bought it at a parking lot sale with no box. $85

if you ever get HF flyers in the mail box keep it. They have the 20% off one item coupons in them every time.... good deal on expensive stuff like this:waytogo:

I've got a Torin, bought it at Northern Hydraulics. IIRC, it was ~$200 with a load leveler. Works great, but I think it's the same one HF sell, they just paint theirs orange instead of red.

I've had the HF version since around 2002. It's placed and pulled several SBCs along with quite a number of other heavy things. Nick (mosesburb) even used it to place and pull that big ol' heavy Cummins setup when he was doing the initial fitment. There are far better options out there, but usually cost more money or you have to look and hope for a "deal". For me it does what it needs to do and takes up fairly little space when not in use.

Mine's a Cummins, sure it's the same as HF. Pretty much all of them are the same. Handy for more than engines.

I have a generic cheapo (from a long-since-gone local tool chain) that remarkably resembles the HF. As mentioned, all these units prolly come from the same Chinese factory.

That said, mine has R&R'd a bigblock/TH400 combo, a lumber rack, a full-convertible top, and a fully loaded DRW 14BFF that I can think of.

I did make longer legs for it so that wouldn't tip when I was doing stupid things, but thus far the boom has done fine, even when overloaded in the longest position. The only problem is that the hydraulic cylinder leaks down overnight, but what do you expect from cheap?

we left my 5.3 hanging on the one I borrow for a few hrs till I got the right bolts. held up fine... wasn't over night though

are the ones you guys are using the 2ton (in max configuration) version or the 1ton version?

The Northern Hyd unit I've looked at is 299 with the load leveler unit ($60 value) but it is also truck shipped and I don't have a NH store near me.

2T. IMHO the 1 ton would be pretty much worthless. So nice being able to extend it out and not run into the front of the vehicle and still have capacity.

My friend got an awesome one used when Pontiac here went out of business. I think he paid $50. Sometimes when auto shops go under they have fire sales. This thing is heavy duty. It takes a couple people just to move the pieces around.

I really like my summit one, because it's so light weight I can easily let people borrow it.

I keep meaning to weld a piece of 2x2" square tube sticking out the *back* of mine, so that it can then be put into a receiver hitch.

Generally this would just be for transport, but it could also then use a truck as counterweight :haha:
