So I'm going to be moving at the end of the year from long island to potsdam ny. So super suburban to rural. Right now I have an 03 civic as a DD and my m1008 as the toy/truck. However, having two cars while being in graduate school doesnt seem to make sense, and Im going to need a vehicle that can travel far and has 4x4. My civic is not 4x4, and the m1008 is dreadful to drive any far distances. So as much as I'd love to bring my truck upstate, the salt would probably kill it and I need a better DD.

I was thinking of selling both and getting a mid 90s cherokee with the straight 6. It seems like a good compromise. I also know the engine is good and the mileage is decent. Are there any other options? Im not too familiar outside of chevys. I would probably get a small bike to go along with the jeep.

love my 2006 Suzuki grand vitara . if possible get it with out awd . little better fuel mileage then . but in awd still not bad .

I have gone snow wheelin with it and was blown away at its abilitys on street grade tires.

I would not buy a Cherokee . They are pretty much considered disposable jeeps. If you are looking for something that has good gas mileage ,and that will last, look for a Toyota truck. I like the old mid 80's w/ a 22re engine. If you can still find one that is in good shape . I'd keep the CUCV and drive it in the summer.

Actually, I changed my mind. THIS IS CK5!!The hell with Jeep and Toyota. Find a S10 Blazer with a 4.3 and at least keep it Chevy!

I dunno about s10s.. you'd take one over a cherokee with the straight 6? I thought cherokees if certain years were solid 4x4s?

I love my cucv. I've had it for years. But I need to move 500 miles away to attend an intense physician Assistant program. The ride would be rough. I also need to replace the suspension and I was going to lift it in the process. The spring hangers are rotting bad. They also salt like hell up there. It would be the death of her.

Right now I have two vehicles for two different purposes, I'm not sure that's feasible up there in school and I'm thinking of blending them into one. A 4x4 I can drive 1.5 hours into Ottawa or 2 hours into Montreal would be nice. That or 30 to 40 min commutes each way.

Theres also the logistical concerns of transporting both vehicles up. Not to mention both are older and will eventually have problems I wont have the time or money to deal with.

PA student life is going to be poor and busy.

I like Cherokees.

But they are all getting older too.

Can be very solid but can be crap.

They get crap mileage too

How about a Suzuki samurai. Get a fuel injected one. They are dead simple.

Not the best roadtrippers if your in a hurry though

I don't like the fact that they are unibodies.Their transmissions are junk, too. The engines are good , though.

I've never been in a Cherokee that didn't have a death wobble at some speed or an odd rot issue.

You'd need to be on 37s to come close to enjoying that m1008 on the highway. That's what I would do, but I also have a dd. They quiet down some if you pull the doors off and get a boom box.

The s10's are really (embarrassingly for gm) unsafe for a newer vehicle if I remember correctly.

I'd get a 90s Tahoe if I wanted a newer truck with a back seat. The depreciation is incredible. 40k Tahoes go for 3-5k a few years later. You can find some that are really well taken care of if you look around. Parts are cheap. They ride wicked comfy on the highway. If you really look you can grab a 6.5 if you want to stick with a diesel. You'll get similar mileage to a Cherokee or a v6 s10 but in a way nicer truck.

The Jeep coil spring front suspension/D44 is also good. I rememember seeing a kit not too long ago that fits a Cherokee front axle and coils to a s-10 frame. Not that this would be ideal for you , as I am sure you want to buy something and not want to dick with it. What about Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon? You like those?

Hmm. A tahoe would be nice. If I can swing something in the year 2000s any suggestions?

Id love to stick with gm. It would stay stock and not be a wheeler. Just something capable for light offroad upstate and snow. No hardcore mud or crazy stuff.

Yeah I wish cherokees weren't unibody. I didn't know the trans were that bad. What if I can find one in stick? I still think they're better than wranglers. Those always seem underpowered and poor in fuel.

After Im a PA I can buy my toys back. I'll probably get a deuce too.

I'm just not familiar with newer GM trucks reputations. Newer meaning after 91 haha

The early to late 2000's tahoes are great, we abuse the piss out of them at my company and they hold up very well. Problem is you pay for them. The wife and I were looking at used Tahoe's but ended up getting her a new Silverado because of the rediculous prices for used Tahoes with low mileage.

I was going to say in the 3 to 6k range they have high 100k miles. Yikes. They must be good vehicles if you can afford one!

What about the nissan or toyota suvs? Ford escapes?

All this makes me want to sell the truck less ha
As much as I hate to see somebody trade a GM for a Toyota, I have several buddies with quad cab Tacomas. They are pretty cool little trucks, but again on the pricey side. At least in the communist state of California...
