Need advice on a cheap reliable 4x4 to replace my CUCV with

Well keep in mind guys I'm not wheeling this thing. Its just for snow and MAYBE trails. Its mostly a commuting vehicle that if I needed to drive 500 miles in I wouldn't hang myself in.

So avoid the aw4 tranny. Any other auto options or should I just get a stick? Wouldn't mind one at all.
LOL ,If you get one get a stick, if you get an auto, make sure you get a temp guage and a trans cooler.I'm not prejudice against JEEPS.

The m1008 is going to ride rough , it being a buck and a quarter. I realize that they aren't the best thing to travel in . Have you thought about softer springs and an overdrive trans or add a gear vendors unit?

That's funny. I worked for AMC from 1984 till 1991. I replaced exactly 1 AW trans in that time frame. That was due to the trans line popping off. Ask him if he remembers the recall on the trans line clips. :)
As for the other claims, I don't agree. The XJ is a fine light duty SUV. NOT A TRUCK for sure.
Yes there so bad he owned 15 of them. I guess he's a slow learner?

As for the stick option, not a fan. If I changed 1 I changed a thousand hydraulic slave cylinders.

There's also a reason so many rural postal services us the crap out of the Cherokees. They are great commuters that don't stop running. I am a firm believer that any trans can be a good one with the correct maintenance. That being said, most Jeep owners are not the best with vehicle maintenance.

Yes, I geuss he is a slow learner. I don't really care if you agree with my views or not . No need to call me stupid or crazy because I don't agree with yours.:grin:

Totally agree!

On the subarus, might as well plan on doing the head gaskets, timing belt and components, because it will need gaskets if they havent been done. Even as low as 100k. I like the subarus (own one though...not me) just got to figure in the 1-2k expense depending on the shop doing the work.

I hear people regurgitate the "jeeps have bad trans" thing from time to time, but I have yet to see it. Lots of beat down cherokees around here that the engine or trans hasnt been out of. The jeep mail car thing made me laugh, they used to be really popular as mail cars around here, I have seen a couple with 400k+ on the original junk.

The mechanic I talked to said best bang for the buck would be the CRV. He said the Sante Fe isn't bad either nor subarus. He said toyota is good too but I'll pay. Said to stay away from nissans or the suzukis. He wasn't too fond of the XJ idea simply because of the age. He said a tahoe is good too but i know they're expensive.

like I said I have the Suzuki grand vitara 06 newer body style . 80k+ miles and no major anything so far .

and as a tow truck guy don't tow many that I can recall.

subarus = rusty under side suspension components . done a few that the lower control arms just disappear from rust and let go .

Honda crv 1-2 I recall for act mechanical problems .

jeep cherroke classics few here and there . mostly tranny cooler lines pop off or rust off.

don't like grand cherrokes parts = 2x the money on lots of the same stuff over the classic at least when I use to be in the shop environment.

Your right I should have said insane. :)
All kidding aside trying to digest what was written about the XJ could be summed up like this. Imagine me trying to convince you the Broncos ride quality was so much better then the K5 it warranted the overly complex twin I beam front end.
Yeah you would call me nuts on that!

Doing my research, CRVs seem to be the best deal as far as condition, mileage and age for the price which is surprising, considering hondas usually hold their values

OK?

I'm confused now.

As for the CRV, those are great vehicles. I worked at a Honda dealership for quite a while, and loved those things. They really can go forever.

Guy I work with bought his 89 Cherokee new and put 365K miles on it before he donated it. Stock motor and trans.

Why not a M1009? This is CK5, right? You get to stay GM, it's a real truck, 20ish mpg w/ the diesel, 4wd, easily lifted, $3-5K all over the place.
This. I drive 60 miles round trip. I did it with an 86 M1009 for 4 years. 1st year was stock. after that it got a 4" lift and 37s, the following year it got a soft top. Put about 50,000 highway miles on it in that time

Rather than do all that, why not simply swap for an M1009? Keep the drivetrain you know, the brand you like, and have the softer ride of the 1/2 (or 5/8?) ton suspension. If you're really worried about the G80, they're not hard to swap out. But I would run it till it broke (if ever).

I am a firm believer that any trans can be a good one with the correct maintenance.

I am a firm believer that some transmissions are far superior to others. And some of the less-good trannies can be downright worthless. :deal:

Unless you consider regular rebuilds to be correct maintenance. :doah:
