Need advice

Getting ready to order 4:56 or 4:88 tonight. Finally have my money situation right to get the axle gears, get them switched. Lockup harness installed and the tranny slightly upgraded, timing set on the distributor, plus some other small stuff.

I have 10 bolt 6 lug axles and remember everyone.....the G80 gov lock setup. It's going to be an around town cruiser at mostly low speeds. No 4WD and no offroading (I know I know)

Unfortunately I don't have the money to pay to replace the carrier and spider gears in the axles, basically a full overhaul, as importing charges are enough to give a heart attack. For now it is only switching the gears. To save the 700R4 from burning up. Fix the timing to save the motor, torque converter lockup kit, and so on.

Question: Can 10 bolt 6 lug axles on my 88' handle 4:88 gears? I have a lift, 35 inch tires and an 700R4 with a bored out 350 block, for those that have not followed this thread, that's the information.

Let me know so I can get this done.

Let me know, thanks guys!

It doesn't sound like you are going to be very hard on your truck so 4.88 gears should be fine for your application. It will make the truck MUCH nicer to drive around than your current gears.

With those factors in mind, I would say 4:88. I have 4:56 with my big block 700R4 truck and liked it better with the 33" tires than the 35"s that it has now.
(Around town and up to 65 mph is what it sees mostly)
But 4:88 is not considered as strong as 4:56 gears.

Thanks for the replies. You guys know my situation with no OD at the moment. I am having a lockup harness installed at the same time I am having everything else done.

With 4:56 or 4:88 will my trannybsearch for OD and overheat. The big factor for me is not having a vehicle in and out of overdrive constantly. If I am wrongly concerned let me know, or badly educated on OD and hearing.

Let me know. I make the purchase in a few hours. And then that's it.

I think I posted before. I have your exact same setup with 4.56:1 gears. Hunts for 3rd at any slight incline above 60mph. I just put it in drive if running around town at 55mph or under. I wish I had gone 4.88:1 gears.

So 4.88:1 is better because I can drive at 60 MPH and go up a small incline without shifting into overdrive? Even if I have the lockup harness and it allows me to shift into 4th (OD)

In Sweden 60 MPH is about our max speed limit anywhere in the country.

I was wrong. Max speed is 74 MPH
Then it's 62 MPH. Those are the highway speeds

City speed is usually 30-45 MPH
In Sweden

My vehicle will have OD. It currently does not. Hence the lockup harness kit. It's installed tge same day as everything else I want to make sure If I am doing 60 MPH to the next city that my axle gears don't overheat my tranny and blow it.

It shifts from OD down into D at the slightest hill. If 64mph is max in the country, I would definitely go with the 4.88:1.

Wow $347. You know what sucks is they weren't made here. We imported from India more than likely.

Ya true. The real kicker though, You can't find these parts over here, but I found a website where I thought I had located them, over 400 dollars for 1 set of 5.56 gears. No way.

It's a very very expensive hobby having/maintaining/repairing classic vehicles in Europe.

Just chiming in to say my 89 k5 had 2.73 gears. I put 35s on it. I daily drove it for a year. Mostly city driving, some highway. Trans was fine. Totally rebuilt the truck. Sold the 700r4 trans to a local kid. He swapped it into his K5 and continued to drive it even longer.

Guess it was luck?

I guess so? Living in Sweden where the cost of just about everything is ridiculous, I am not going to chance it. Can't afford to repair or replace a tranny.
