I am in a bind and my truck has been down for 2 weeks already.

I have a 1986 CUCV. Someone converted it to 12 volt and there is only 1 alternator.

I broke the post on the alternator while driving over a washboard road. This is the ceramic type post on the back to the "hot" wire connects to.

So gradually the batteries wore down and I could not start it. Local AutoZone knuckleheads were no help. I discovered the problem and took the alternator to a local auto electrical shop. I asked them to repair the post, as I am really, really broke, and cannot afford a total rebuild.

They told me that the rotor was bad and gave me an estimate of $212 to rebuild my alternator, since it "was modified to a 24 volt system"

I said "no thanks" and I will go pick up my alternator today and pay the $25 I have in labor.

I did read on SteelSoldier(which I cannot access) that they are simply dual 12volt alternators and there was nothing special about them, and they could be had for $100 or so.

I cannot get a local parts guy to get me what I need.

Can anyone help me out as far as which alternator I can use??

I'd find another rebuilder. There is nothing special about the rotor in your current alternator. The only thing special about your alternator is the isolated ground and you don't even need that if your system has been converted to 12 volts.

If you go to a parts store and have them look up the high amperage alternator for a 1986 K30 it should work fine in your vehicle.

SteelSoldiers just changed over to a new format, so you might try them again. http://www.steelsoldiers.com/ or here is what was their old forum http://old.steelsoldiers.com/

What he said.

There's also a few vendors on there who sell alts. One guy even says he has a bunch of them. Goes by 84CUCV on here and 84CUCV1ton on there.

I have several good used ones I'll sell you. One for $35 shipped or two for $60 shipped. Off of a CUCV too so they have the extra isolated ground post even though you don't need it anymore.
