I am in a bind and my truck has been down for 2 weeks already.
I have a 1986 CUCV. Someone converted it to 12 volt and there is only 1 alternator.
I broke the post on the alternator while driving over a washboard road. This is the ceramic type post on the back to the "hot" wire connects to.
So gradually the batteries wore down and I could not start it. Local AutoZone knuckleheads were no help. I discovered the problem and took the alternator to a local auto electrical shop. I asked them to repair the post, as I am really, really broke, and cannot afford a total rebuild.
They told me that the rotor was bad and gave me an estimate of $212 to rebuild my alternator, since it "was modified to a 24 volt system"
I said "no thanks" and I will go pick up my alternator today and pay the $25 I have in labor.
I did read on SteelSoldier(which I cannot access) that they are simply dual 12volt alternators and there was nothing special about them, and they could be had for $100 or so.
I cannot get a local parts guy to get me what I need.
Can anyone help me out as far as which alternator I can use??
