I'm needing to convert to disc brakes on my old 70 GMC. I would like to get everything and including the knuckles out. I'm not working right now (off because of work injury) so if I could get these cheap I would appreciate all the help I can get. I'm just south of Springfield, IL. Please PM me or email [email protected]

I'll have a 6 lug axle coming out of my '85 GMC Jimmy shortly... new brake pads but the rotors were not much to speak of. If you can't find anything closer I could toss the rotors and ship the rest fairly cheap. I'd want $50 for the knuckles out plus shipping.

I'm keeping the knuckles because they are flat tops. I'd sell you my other knuckles, but I won't be doing crossover for quite a while. I just happened to get a deal on these 2 axles. I can check with the guy I bought these from, I think he had another D44 lying around. :D

I'm in WA state. Don't know that I'll be getting the axle out within the next couple weeks though. Leaving for MN next weekend and work 200 miles from home right now so I'm gone during the week... so it will be a couple weeks before I have the time to get it out.

I have a set of knuckles off a '76 D44, not flat-tops. Just took the axle out of my truck a month ago. The ball joints seem fine, but of course no guarantee.

$25 for both+the ride.

Thank you 69TowRig for the help.

No problem. I converted my '69 K5 last year, what a PITA. Right after I had bought the knuckles, hubs, rotors, etc I started finding complete axles. I wish that I had waited for a complete one, because all those little parts add up after a while. I did add a power booster, rebuilt master, and disc/drum proportioning valve to the mix, new hard lines and flex hoses too. But overall it would have been easier if I had a complete one to start with.

It's a LOT of work. In the end it was worth it, the truck has brakes to stop a train now, but all that time into it was a drain on my energy (and funds).

One thing to note, if you do the disc swap with 73+ knuckles but keep the original outer shafts you will find that the snap ring that used to retain the outer axle shaft will no longer fit. You will need two 7/16-20x1" bolts and fender washers to retain the axle shaft. I can send you pics if you want them. It seems that the disc outer shafts are about 1/4" longer.

Thanks for the info. I did notice that the shafts were shorter, but didn't know what to do about it. I would apppreciate the pics and any help I can get.

Would it work to use the 73+ outer shafts with the swap?

Yes, that would let you keep the snap ring instead of doing this:

You know what, I remembered something, those 73+ outers might not work unless spicer sells a hybird joint for the front axle. 72-earlier used a smaller u-joint than the 73+.
