Drove to work parked my truck on an incline(front up) went to leave 12hrs later put in reverse and it died. Cranked several times and it started but ran for a short time.
Just changed the lift pump,( truck still not starting. Bought a hand pump from walmart(kind for boats). Also put clear tube on injection pump. I see bubbles and diesel come thru it but never fill tube completly. Cranked without pink wire and also cracked some injector lines to see if dribble, and nothing. What now? How do I check my injector pump?? Is that whats wrong?

How much fuel do you have left? It almost seems like either

a. out of gas
b. break in fuel line.

If your still getting air, thats one or the other- You gotta be able to get a bleed without the air.

Problem is, he's getting air. Makes it that much more annoyoing unfortunately. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Didn't say enough....Check the fuel filters to make sure the drain valves n stuff are tight.

I checked them and I did fill them both when I replaced them.
What if I had a hand pump on the return line after the injector pump, would that help bleed it of air??

Check the fuel lines and clamps?
Check the lift pump clamps too. Not sure about anything else. That's about my limit.

Wait wait wait- You say you changed the lift pump, but are now getting nothing out of it? The lift pump doesnt particularly care if you have air bubbles or not, it will just keep pumping.

You gotta get that part straigtened out first- Also, my truck came with an in line electric helper pump under my cab- see if you have one.

I am wondering what the pump is doing ? Do you feel it suck when cranking it over ? Then check the other port for pressure . if all that is okay the I wonder 2 things ? One is maybe a hose is callapsing under pressure closing fuel off or maybe your fuel return is open or worse yet your injecter pump has gone on vacation .

I'll have to get back to you on that one I'l check and see.
Need to get the wife to help.
If im getting fuel thru the return hose, but with air, does this mean my lift pump is working??

Bubbles in the return line don't necessarily mean the lift pump is or isn't working. The IP can draw the fuel it needs from the tank, but it's hard on it to do so. Bubbles in the return means you have air coming to the IP along with the fuel. Start checking all your fuel lines and clamps. You have an air leak leak somewhere. Sometimes a hose can have a leak so small fuel won't drip out, but air will get sucked in.

A bad lift pump will make starting the truck hard if it's been sitting for a while or if it's been parked uphill. Another failure that's possible is the lift pump allowing fuel to drain back. It is supposed to act like a one-way valve but the earlier lift pumps didn't and often had problems with drain back.

I'd verify that every line and fitting/clamp is good between the tank and the lift pump. Then I'd crack a line between the lift pump and the IP and have a helper crank the engine (pink wire disconnected) and see if you have fuel being pumped by the lift pump.

If you have no leaks and the lift pump works then I'd try and bleed out the air between the IP and the injectors. Pink wire connected, glow plugs removed, crack all 8 injector lines so they're loose but not off and spin the motor over. You should see fuel begin to drip from the lines. Tighten them up as they begin to drip. Re-install the GP's, cycle them and try and start the truck.

Thank you very much, I found a leak in a line after the tank to the lift pump. There is a rubber hose in the middle of 2 metal lines.
Why wouldn't it just be a straight metal line, why a 4 inch piece of hose??

So...does it run now? /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif

Well just replaced 2 hoses. Pulled out 2 glow plugs. 6 would not come all the way out. Cracked all 8 lines to injectors, and cranked until drip was present.Replaced glow plugs and tightened lines. Hooked up bat charger and tried 2 start. NO START and batteries are dead. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Well, if you couldn't get them out you prolly have the AC9s or 14s in there and they have mushroomed. I had this problem. Pull heads, remove glow plugs. Or you can do the ole take the injector off and break it and hope you get everything out way! There is a tool I think by snap on called glow plug removal tool. Its a nut that you put on the glow plug and it takes em out, if they can come out!! Did you try pulling on them hard?

It has been covered before here. Not a fun place to be at.
