My 91 K5 has a rebuilt 350/700R4 with an RV cam and occasionally at stop signs it decides to idle down and rock side to side like a race car. Could the calpak in the ECM need changed, please any advice is welcomed.

Gary

tbi + non stock cam = bad drivability.

if you know the specs on the cam you need to get the chip burnt for it.

if you dont have the specs then time for laptop / winaldl cable / software for catching feedback and full custom chip from there.

www.tbichips.com can do chips for good price.

but there could be other problems other than this. i had a 355 with rv cam. ran o.k. but there was problems. swaped in tbi350 i had and all went away runs great now.

ECM Issues

Contacted the machine shop that rebuilt the engine, the cam should not be the issue, its a standard cam. My ECM has the ASDU chip, so now I wonder if I need to swap that out with another chip. Any suggestions?

I would be curious to see the cam profile, tbi's dont like cams with very aggressive profiles. They really must be computer friendly for the tbi to run properly. Too much duration or too little lsa and the truck will run like crap. Once these mods start going on you will quickly learn that the injectors cant keep up. When I built my stroker the motor would barely run with the stock tbi. But I also did heads, intake and cam. In any of these situations you will most certainly have to burn a chip appropriate for your setup.

It could be a mechanical issue or it could be because of the aftermarket upgrades. Lets first determine this then go from there, did the shop install the cam?
Find out the grind and tell us a little more about your setup. Stock heads? Intake? TBI? etc...need lots of answers to help pin this down.

yep i dont care what the shop said ( its stock it will be fine ) its not fine. didnt run like this before did it. ?

need the specs. tbi is sensitive to cams .

ECM Issues

Cam is computer friendly. Other than a K&N filter and headers the drivetrain is stock. Stock TBI with EGR and emissions crap are in tact. I have been told to take EGR off and clean with brake cleaner and see if that solves it. But, that seems odd to me. Because when it idles down i can throttle it out or if I shut engine off it will quit. So, thats what makes me lean towards calpak in ECM.

Saw the motocross comment, I used to race before joining the Army, its one of the few things I miss daily.

beleve what you want on the cam. i am only speeking from my past experence.

and just cause its comp friendly does not mean its current chip / program friendly.

you come on and ask our help and then dont answer the question's we need to help you then thats your choice.

i am going to sit this one out now.

I have an RV cam in my 355 TBI. Thats suppose to be a computer friendly cam and guess what, the truck will hardly pull its weight on the stock tune until the computer can adjust from the o2 sensor when its heated...

Datalog the truck when it does it. That'll tell you if theres a bad output from the computer if your so insistent its the ECM

ECM Issues

Sorry if you took it that way, not my intentions.

The motor was built from the previous owner. So getting specs are difficult for me. That's why I can't answer all the questions.

Understand you sitting this one out but thanks for the help up to this point.

Insistent, due to being the consensus, until joining this forum. But, now it seems as if I pissed people off for not being knowledgeable enough to answer all questions. Thanks for the help will definitely give it a look.

not going to start a pissing match. but seems lots of people latly wont give us all the info till we basicly say figure it out your self.

if you had just said i dont have the specs and was told comp friendly then o.k. i would have just told you its time for data log with laptop and winall cable. this will get you the best tune for the money .

all is good. welcom to the site and just tell the truth and have fun. :D

and i am not saying its just the diffrent cam . but good place to start knowing the cmputers/program is set for 1 basic profile. when you change it that willwaterfall the problems.

Here are my facts. New to four-wheel drives. First injected 350 and first K5. Always wanted one and after my knee surgery it was too much to get in and out of a small car so went and found one. Now I am dealing with a guy that lied on several accounts about the Jimmy and now trying to get everything taken care of and this forum has already helped me out better than any other stop has in the past.

Yeah dude dont take it the wrong way. Its just "tough love" sorta speak.

I save all my lashing out for jerk off idiots on pirate.

Just read your reply. I already have a local guy that is gonna look into it for me based off ur post. Thank you once again this forum has been a great help.

I am also having the same problems with my TBI, I have stock LM1 crate motor and a very mild RV cam edeldrock# 2102 and just have simple things like aftermarket intake manifold, headers and a 670cfm holley throttle body. The guy at TBIchips.com said that the stage2 chip would work good with my motor and turns out I can bearly drive it now. The truck falls on its face and will backfire out the intake and stall if u squeez into the throttle to hard. I had a Holley truck advenger carb on there befor and it ran tits just crapy fuel miliage. I just got an adapter plate bolted it on with a TBI unit 1227747 ecm and now the dam thing wont get out of its own way! Anybody know what I can do? It has good vacuum 16iches @ idle. And yes I do have a heated O2.
