my apologies to the mods and rule sticklers, but wanted to post the link here for maximum exposure....

truck is currently in my parents driveway without an up to date state inspection, and the longer it sits there, the more likely my mom will set it on fire.

again, thanks for any and all help yall can gimmi on this. if i cant find what im looking for, ill just have to bite the bullet and fix what i got.

Honestly, for the money you'd probably end up spending on buying this new tub and having it shipped,,,, especially shipped,,, you'd probably be better off just grabbing what parts off your current truck and scrapping the rest or parting out whatever is left over, getting another truck and essentially start over.

Unless you have some deal with it being an old military truck, take the VIN with it, swapping a different body onto the old frame isn't going to gain ya anything in my opinion.

What he said. Try and find a whole, running truck out there. Worked for me. Then swap your engine. They don't go away out there like the rust belt so they don't retain such a high price as in the rust belt.

yeah, my only thing is that the current chassis has everything already in place, hydroboost brakes, fuel system, wiring, engine, etc. when its all said and done, swapping the body actually seems less daunting to me. although i have realized by the time im done with all the mods i want to do... the only thing original on the truck will be the engine, frame, hydroboost and other things like that.

what i would REALLY be gaining is the full convertable, which ive missed since i killed my jeep in vermont. otherwise, i have already purchased the fender and door i need to fix the truck as it sits, but the front end is still very badley tweaked. and ill need to pay a body shop to realign everything. and i still got a rotted out passenger rocker panel, rear quarters, and front wheel liners. as well as front floor boards, and rear bed floors.

i dont know how to weld yet, and i have no experience with body work, so fixing the major damage on this body is well out of my abilities. but i can sand and primer and even paint just fine. so something with minor rust i can handle. hence where replacing the body is more appealing to me.

Honestly, your either better off fixing your truck as is, or getting the truck you want, and scrapping this one. Time and price wise, the job your trying to do will take more effort and time then it is for you to fix your truck and learn how to weld. Money wise, you can buy a used welder off craigslist, and fix the rust yourself. Took me some time, but I learned by watching videos on youtube, reading websites, etc. Im no expert, but I replaced a rocker myself. It was rusted to !@#!.

Before you undertake this project, check exactly what is tweaked. It could just be alignment, could be some body mounts. Until you check it out, you just don't know. Might not be that bad.

I mentioned the shipping issue only because if you're getting just the tub, or even a rolling chassis, it's going to have to be flatbedded, or car hauler out to you, it's gonna be pricey. Heck i tried to get a price to ship a transmission back to Phoenix from Indiana to have the rebuilder redo some things for free, but the shipping costs for having it shipped there and back were going to be about as much as a new rebuilt one in town. about $300 each way. I would think shipping just a tub, which would have to be forklifted and flatbedded to ya, is going to definately cost more than it would to just find another truck near you and swap out parts, or just repair what you have.

lining up fenders and whatnot is not that difficult on these things IF the frame isn't bent, which i'm getting yours isn't.

Front clips are not too hard to come by either, just finding them at the right price can be a chore sometimes.

haven't looked at your pics, will do that now and see what ya got goin ono there :D

Pictures?

of the carnage? ill post some up tonight after i get home. the whole front clip is about 4-6 inches off towards the passenger side, hood is fubar from coming open while driving at highway speeds, and the driver fender is crunched and diven back into driver front door, which is now also fubar from opening and closing.

as for wheel wells, floor boards, tailgate, and quarter panels, i can take pics of those when i get home.

you may have more damage than you think on this thing if you had a front end collision, those fenders may have pushed some mounting points back on the firewall piece and may not allow any new parts to be bolted right on and fit right anyways. And taking this truck to the body shop i can tell you, will NOT be worth it. I have taken a few cars in the past year or so to a couple of shops for what i thought was minimal type body repairs and turned out to be WAY expensive. I guess they expect insurance companies to pay those outragous prices.

I'd start by removing some body parts and inspect under the panels to make sure the structure is still going to be straight enough for anything useful.

Worst case, it's now a dedicated trail rig :waytogo:

And try to find yourself a chicken coop to rent lol.

funny you say that...

**** :sign28: ****

i built my blue Chevelle in a chicken coop in Princeton... when i was putting the BB in, the hoist wheel went thru the slab...... :doah: :haha:

in the barn section, the landlord had an all steel 40 Willy's coupe just sitting there.... frame and body.. i'd kill for that now for the next project... :doah:

carry on...... :o

As for shipping, my uncle has a truck and trailer, so i would take the time off from work to drive out and get them, and haul them back most likely. only cost would be food and fuel, and lost wages, not the end of the world.

but, perhaps yall are right, and just fixing what i got is the best option at this point. ive already got the fender and door, need to get a hood (body shop already told me it would be more expensive to fix it than replace it.), i suppose i can put it together enough to pass inspection, and use this body to learn to weld, and get the full conv. later.

damn you guys, youre supposed to be my devil's on my shoulder. youre actually giving rational advise. :dunno:

at gas costing over $3.00/gallon, and on the rise,,,, i highly doubt you will be driving anywhere to pick up anything for less than a shipping company could ship it for. They work with multiple loads usually, so they can drop the normal rates down, but still are expensive for the actual value of the truck you're dealing with.

I'm dealing with a "shipping" issue myself of sorts, i have a bunch of stuff in storage out in Phoenix, but the cost of gas for me to drive out there and get the stuff back to Indiana is going to be around $800 if not alittle more, when i moved out here, i pulled a loaded 12' trailer with sides and the Burb completely loaded even the roof rack, and spent about $370 on gas, and the price was about $2.75 or so a gal.

NOW,i have a truck and trailer to pick up out there, so i will most likely just be flying out there when i have the funds up, rent a 14' U-Haul and load it up with the rest of my belongings, pull the trailer with the newly acquired truck on it back here. :D

Not trying to discourage you on all of this, but the days of shipping stuff, and driving around to pick stuff up has gotten pricey for time lost and especially fuel costs.

We are the devil on your shoulder. We are also reasonable- if we give you advice to go ahead and do something way too advanced, or way too costly, or too much downtime, you may not get it done, which means you'll be out a k5, and your mom will kill you.

collision was pretty severe - ran off the road by a semi durring the blizzard back in february, truck "j hooked" turned sideways going down the road gradually gaining more "forward" momentum instead of "sideways". impacted a concrete jersey wall between 35-40 mph. truck never stopped running, and to date hasnt lost any fluids.

as for a dedicated trail rig... my parents would **** kittens at the idea. lol
