Im trying to get my 72 k5 back on the road. Im thinking of doing an LS swap, upgrade the transmission to a 4L80e, upgrade the axles, and T-Case. My question is, I'm looking at a 241 t-case but don't know which one would be the best for my application and what year truck to pull it from. Since I'm considering a driver side axle, what would be the best T-case and transmission set up for my application. Currently I have an NP205 but that has a passenger drop, which Im having a really hard time finding a 1 ton axle with a passenger drop. I need all the help I can get with this set up. If anyone would please point me in the right direction on I would appreciate it.

I would find a 6.0 out of a 3/4 ton truck with a 4L80E and a transfer case too.

Or get an LS and then buy the trans/transfer case together.

The reason I asked is because you could adapt the NP205 to the 4L80E, but if you had a TH350 it would require a different input shaft, and possibly boring the case for a bigger bearing, but that might only be for the SM465 version NP205 cases, I am not sure.

Do you plan to use the stock computer or aftermarket controls like Holley or Edelbrock, etc?

If you change the cam and valve springs you can really wake it up but then it requires a tune or an EFI controller. Not sure how that effects you in Cali too, might limit your options.

I'm thinking I would like to keep the engine stock should I get an LQ4 or LQ9. My plan is to pull one out of my local junk yard including harness and computer and just follow some of the harness rewire tutorials. Nothing fancy.

I would like to keep the NP205 but when I swap to 1 tons, It would require me to have a driver side drop. What other T-cases and from what year trucks would i be able to pull from for a driver side drop that would mate up with a 4L80e with out much issue.

Something doesn't make sense. The 205 should be a passenger side drop.

Any LS combo with a newer Tcase would likely be a drivers side drop.

It's up to you whether you want to swap the axle to driver side or adapt your current 205 to the 4L80E or a 4L60E, depends on what you can find, then you don't need a different axle. If you want a 1 ton axle keep an eye out for a Dana 60 Chevy kingpin axle for a passenger side drop. I think Ford may have used a drivers side drop but then it won't be a near bolt in like the Chevy axle.

Either an LQ9 or LQ4 would work fine, they are pretty similar.

241c and I think 1991 suburbans and crew cabs are the last year.
Chevy went driver side drop with the ifs trucks in 92.
The 4l80e can be made to match about any t case or t case to 4l80e.
