Got a problem!

I ran into a problem when replacing the front brake pads on my 1999 Jeep Cherokee Classic. There are 2 bolts that hold the brake caliper to the steering knuckle. The threads inside the steering knuckle for the bottom hole and bolt are completely gone. How they got this way I do not know. I have had the Jeep since september, so this is the first time I have done a brake job on the jeep.

I have tried to re-tap the hole with no luck. The threads are too far gone and the hole is worn quite a bit.

Without replacing the steering knuckle what else can I do? A larger bolt doesn't seem to be an option since the bolt has to go through a bushing in the caliper. The bolt size is 5/16 or 8mm.

JB weld it for now? and replace knuckle later?

thanks for the help

And IIRC, I think it is a 9mm not sure the pitch though, I've done a bunch of those before.

x2 on the helicoil have done a couple myself

Be very careful about your bolt length its easy to get the bolt tight and have it just touch the rotor.

is it a bolt/slide if so ask the part counter for a ford escort repair bolt/slide. thay work. i use them all the time.

if its a bolt threw the slide tube then swap to american or metric size bigger and drill the slide out a bit to make the hole bigger and then tap the knuckle to that size.

i have done both before with good luck.
