Need help with lift!

yea 3.73s with 40"s is not a good idea but i think with 4.10s you should be ok depending on the shape of the trany. its worked for me so far. plus a th400 auto trany is about $100 in my neck of the woods so burn um up. its way cheaper than regearing.

4.10's are not that much better then 3.73. lower is always better, at least get 4.56's.

I still need some more opinions on gearing and ways to help the engine.

Also I heard a body lift will mess up the bumbers.. is this true?

hipo carbs only help engines that are thirsty. if your startin out stock just remember the three main things to buildin performance: displacement, compression, and flow. flow is where the carbureator starts coming into the build and if you dont have any other mods than any stock quadraturd will work. my dads old boat had 450 hp without a hipo carb.

Re-gearing is not really optional. It keeps the motor in its optimum power band. 4.10's with 40's would be fine on the street, but not enough low end for the trail. I have 4.56's with 37's and I think it could use lower gears or a doubler. Buring up a tranny instead of re-gearing is just dumb. Just my .02:rolleyes:

Like Chris said pick up a set of 3/4 ton or if you got the change a set of 1 tons. Most came with 4.10's or Look for a set from the old military 1 tons with 4.56's and a detroit in the rear. This is cheaper than paying to re-gear the 10 bolts and they probably wont last with much abuse on 40's anyway.

4.56's will be ok if you still want highway speeds at a decent RPM. 4.88 or 5.13's if you really want great low range off road.

It doesn't mess them up, but it will leave a gap between the body and the top of the bumper. They make brackets to move the bumpers up, but you lose some of the strength. I would go with a 4" Spring and maybe add a 1" add a leaf. (Check out DIY4X.com or ORD for those.) Then you could do a 1" body if you need to, but with 40's and ~6" of lift you are going to have to cut your front fenders anyway..just depends on how much you want to cut.:D

I'm not a big motor guy, but you could do heads, cam, intake, higher compression pistons, or get a crate motor. :D There isnt a lot of just "bolt-on" mods to make a lot of power.
