Need help with my leaking steering box

So about a year back I replaced my steering box with a remanned one.

I put it in and noticed that it was leaking a little bit from the top nut about a week or so later (well not 100% positive but I couldn't find any leak anywhere and it kind of looks like it is coming out of there). I did adjust it a little tighter when I put it in as it was feeling a little sloppy.

Fast forward to today where I decided to replace the 7/16-20 nylon nut on top after reading another post where someone did it and it fixed the leak.

When I took off the old nut, I didn't see a washer or anything between it and the box - is there supposed to be one there such as a copper crush or nylon washer? In another thread someone said that they used a copper crush washer with the new nut to stop the leak. I put the new nut back on, and it's leaking worse. I'm puzzled on how it would not leak in general because there is nothing to stop the fluid between the nut and the box.

Also - any tips on adjustment would help, I can't drop the box out to get it off the rubber donut (which was hard to get on) to torque it properly. I think it's a little tight now - I've had been adjusting it 1/8th a time with the old nut to get it less sloppy. I read somewhere to get it fairly tight binding and back it off 1/2 turn but that makes me a tad nervous and I'm not sure exactly what binding is like.
