Need opinions on a 1998 crewcab with 6.5l turbo

Looking to buy a 6.5l turbo diesel gmc 4x4 crew cab has 165,000 miles its clean guy wants $7000 have never owned a diesel and have read mixed reviews trust the opinions given here on ck5 what do you guys think thanks
 
they are great for a cummins swap. I can tell you that.

the 6.5 is a mixed bag of reliability and headache in my experience. if you like the truck, buy it. when it does blow up. throw a cummins in there.

I like the truck but dont want to spend the money to buy then have to drop kore into it what are some of the things to look for I have never owned a diesel before.
 
Take it to a diesel shop for an inspection before purchasing. They can give you a better idea of what condition the thing is in and if it is worth messing with. If cared for properly, the 6.5L can be a good and reliable engine. But, you don't know how to tell if it was cared for. I can't imagine that it is worth more than $3500-4000 though. You can buy a high mileage Cummins or Powerstroke for $6000

The main failures on the 6.5L are bottom of the block cracking, crankshafts cracking/breaking, blown head gaskets, and PMD failures. Everything but the PMD failure guaranty spending another $3000+ in repairs.
 
Eh thats pricey for a GMT400 especially when the 6.5 isnt the most esteemed motor and everyone and their mother knows it.
 
I thought the military Humvees used the 6.5 turbo diesel engines
 
in 97 they switched to a more efficient cooling system which really helped.
so youre good there.

what you want to check and see is if the PMD has been relocated. 95% of the problems these engines get is an overheating PMD (pump mounted driver) basically its the brain of the fuel injection system. the problem is they mounted this little electrical unit down next to the innards of the intake manifold, so its basically heated the whole damn time. what you want to do, if it has not been relocated. is move that bastard far away. lol. the most common kits are 1. on top of the intake manifold, 2. with a long cable and mounted up by the grill/front bumper area. obviously the further away from the engine heat it is the better it runs/lasts.

honestly these engines get a really bad rap but you have to go into them knowing what to expect. they will never make the kind of power of a cummins/duramax/powerstroke, but properly taken care of, you will be able to get solid low 20s on mileage and have decent BBC torque easy peasy.

As long as you get it checked out to be sure it is in good condition to start out with and take care of it from there, it should last a long time. They have a bad rap for a reason. But, I still like the motors since I know what to look for and I can usually buy them cheaper than Fords or Dodges.
